I am by no means an intelligent person, I used to go to church and have a strong faith in organized religion. As I got older and began to form my own thoughts I came to realize that organized religion is a sham to control the weak minded and Tom Cruise is our 1 true god.

However, there are numerous methods of dating, not going into everyone of them. ex. tree ring dating goes past the 6000 year range, to about 12k, yea thats the one where you count the rings and use over lap of ring characteristics between trees to get a timeline. But I guess that logic is just a weee bit too hard to understand for the bible belt

It's funny because I had exactly the same discussion about god and religions today with a friend of mine at work.

He said the rules in the religions are what's keep people to no kill each other and that religions are needed.

People like that are the reason I love the quote, "Morality is doing what is right regardless of what you are told; religion is doing what you are told regardless of what is right."  It always gives me a chuckle when people assume you're an immoral, evil being simply for not believing in god.  But then again, they're typically the type that cannot think for themselves and may truly need someone to tell them that killing someone is bad, m'kay?

I concur.  To be fair, most people that don't believe in religion aren't usually foolish enough to claim they KNOW he doesn't exist.  Most religious people KNOW god exists, because, well, they just know.

I myself was raised to believe in god, love god, love my family and neighbors.

I got older.   I see the world for what it is and the logic in it, even the illogic of the quantum level.

I then see the formations of religion....
For instance Catholic:  for control of the masses.  This is a very solid opinion.  I don't argue over opinions. 

Which leads me to another point:
If you are raised and around people that are racist against (ethnic person) you stand a very reasonable chance that you yourself will be that way.    This is how people are.


Now apply that to the simple and PROVEN TRUTH that the people living then were very very stupid.  Lacking all but basic social, cultivating and math skills.  Yet they all beyond a reasonable doubt believed in a creator.

What about Pluto... Do you still believe it to be a planet?   How long did we hold onto that crazy ideal that a huge asteroid is a planet?  Cause someone high up in that field said so.  And it spread.

How many people still this day say "It's still a planet".  More than I care to say.

I myself still believe in "God" as defined as a higher power or level of being, but I by far am not a actively overly religious person.

Being raised Mormon left me with this:

Treat others as you wish to be treated.  I.E be nice
Love everyone as if they were family (ultimately superceeds the above line)
Love god, and be thankful for someone that once upon a time wished the world would change and people could get along.

I'm a good damned person.  An asshole at times, but I don't intentionally fuck people over, and if I ever do by accident -- I do what's possible to amend it.  I don't need religion to have ethics.

I have a very religious coworker.  He's going off to some theology school sometime in the near future and is already preaching to a congregation.  One day, him and some others were discussing some news article about atheists and he said something that earned him massive respect from me.  Something to the effect of, "atheists could be right, neither side is proven, I just choose to believe in god."

My stance is the exact same, just on the other side of the fence.

If you want to believe in a COMPLETE DOUCHEBAG, then go right ahead.  A guy that created Adam and Eve, knowing that they would introduce sin (he is all-knowing!), purposefully sending his son down here knowing we would kill him, which in turn condemned all future generations to hell (I assume you support paying reparations to ancestors of slaves), then revived him anyway.  A guy that created all life, including the parasites and diseases killing us every day.  A guy that was keen on performing miracles back when the bible was written, but today decides it's not worth the effort.  A guy that gives us all free will (which can't truly exist if he has a plan for all of us) to form our own opinions, then is happy with condemning people to hell for eternity for using LOGIC to believe something that actually has EVIDENCE to support it.  If god wants us to believe he exists, why doesn't he just exist?  A god that will send a mass-murderer to heaven if he just has faith, yet will condemn an entirely moral productive person to an eternity in hell for not believing.  A guy that will condemn billions to hell simply for believing in a different god that has an equal amount of supporting evidence (aka none).  He really sounds like a stand-up kind of guy!

If he "loves" us so much why would he allow hell to exist?.... there are more logical loopholes in Christianity than there are missing links in evolution. 

That said, I think that religion is a great business plan!  Make people fear the wrath of god and convince them to give up their money so they can feel safe, AWESOME!

Back in the day when some guys were coming up with all the religions that still exist today, science didnt exist in its great capacity like it does now.  Writings and ideas created 2000+ years ago are formed for generally uneducated minds.  Its different these days thanks to science gaining ground.

Ignoring the fact that the idea we cannot synthetically create life is completely false (thanks Google).  Complex biological processes do not prove god exists any more than they prove OCZC exists.  Using something that we can't explain or recreate (although in the case of life, we can recreate and explain it) is never evidence of god.  Don't forget humans used to believe the earth was flat, the center of the universe, the sun was a god, etc -- and a lot of that shit was believed around the time the stupid bible was written.

A soul?  If a soul truly existed, neurological disorders would be nonexistent.  A soul is this magical "thing" that just exists in side of you and was gifted by god.  It shouldn't be effected by the physical realm, yet it is.  In reality, your brain is just an immensely complex chemical reaction that we haven't completely figured out, but there is a lot of progress being made.  Sorry, but you have no soul, you're "soul" is just the state of your brain and a product of your environment and experiences.

The problem with matter in general is that we have no way what so ever to know of any intrinsic properties of the matter. This is the problem with consciousness and "souls". You can assume that the brain is nothing more than a lot of different external chemical reactions, but to explain the experience of the aboutness of consciousness (something that exists internally within matter) you need something other than an outward physical description of the matter itself.
