4runner vs pathfinder
« on: December 02, 2011, 12:32:57 PM »

So i sold my ungodly badass Honda Pilot not too long ago and for whatever reason was looking for another vw.  i started to think about it and honestly i think id miss 4wd as i often go to the outer banks and ride the beaches.  So im looking in the 7k range for a used 4runner or pathfinder between 95-2000, not too picky so long as the mileage isnt like too high and the truck is nice.

Someone tell me something about them. i figure both are fairly rock solid but what are somethings i should look for.

In my opinion they are very similar vehicles as far as mpg, power, offload ability, etc. I would go with a pathfinder personally. I hate working on toyotas but can tolerate nisAnd because I'm an intellectual being, . Toyota just does weird shit that always makes me scratch my head. The only real issue I have come across on pathfinders are the distributors going bad.

Your out your mind!

4runner > pathfinder

I had both, the 4runner is better in every way. Also pathfinders have shit trans that loved to die if you just look at it wrong.

350,000 miles on my old 4runner before selling it, last I heard was it had over 420,000 miles and still running strong.

I worked at a Nissan dealer for about a year, only thing I have ever fixed on them was distributors.

I work at a engine importer a few years back, that was one of the most bought trans.

I'm not saying you are wrong, just putting in my experience. I have worked on plenty of both and I would pick the pathfinder over the 4 runner

Having already owned the Pinnacle of 4x4 excellence (Honda Pilot Naturally) i don't want to hog all the awesomeness and would rather try something that is obviously inferior to the rock crushing, obstacle hurdling, god given perfect design that is Variable Torque Management.

I have had both, but prefer the pathfinder.  granted, both of mine were older than what you'r looking for. fuel economy, off road capability, were on level playing fields, but the pathfinder just seemed more solid.  was quieter driving down the road, and had a more comfortable interior.

That's because with how expensive it was to put an automatic transmission in them every ten miles they couldn't afford dealership prices.  Fuck you?

Get a Cherokee for $3000.  What you save in the purchase you pay back in the first two years of gas, though.

7K will probably get you an 01' Isuzu Trooper with ~50-60K miles. They are more of a truck than a 4 runner though, worse mileage, ride rougher, etc. Avoid the 99-00's as they burn oil, but otherwise are fine.

Nothing a few VW badges and some heated leather seats with built in cupholders won't fix, right?

They are fairly rare.  Mechanically they are just a trooper that they shrunk down a little bit, put a bigger engine in, and made handle semi-decently (probably stiffer sway bars).  I kind of want one, they are badass off road and look like they are from the future.

LOVE my 98 PAthy SE.... Very good handling, decent milage and runs GREAT.

Nissan tranny issues were more related to earlier (95 and older). Even when they did shit, 90 percent of the timer it was a ssolenoid, nothing more.

I bought my Pathfinder gbecasue it was so clean, I grew to really like it, quickly.

You wont be dissapointed.
