Ok Rhmt patrons, I need some help here. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. So, I live in missouri. currently going to school and doing well as far as grades go. However, I got my hours cut back so severely at work that I might as well be laid off. My credit card keeps piling up with debt. However, A friend that I work with got me hooked up with a gig working out in S. Dakota on military-civilian contract putting up siding on Air Force barracks. Job pays $20/piece and avg is about 200 - 300$ per day. Contract ends at the first of November. Just waiting on the bid to go through, but I've already been promised a spot on the crew if it does. I also want to have some money put aside for a down payment on a house once I find a stable job, and with this economy, houses are affordable. 
Here's the dilemma, my lease isn't up until August for my current residence. my roommate wanted to get a house with me and another guy but he doesn't completely trust the other guy (he's also a bit of a slob) without me there. I told him I'd send money each month for my portion of the rent but I think he's more concerned about having a shitty roommate in the meantime. My girlfriend is in tears because she doesn't want to be away from me for 5 months because we don't know if its going to ruin our relationship (its fairly new @ 5 months but we spend everyday together and its going really well). Probably my biggest concern is that this may put me a year behind in school because I'll miss the fall semester and some classes offered in the fall won't be offered in the spring.

So thesis: Should I leave for S. Dakota and make 20 - 30k and have a comfy pillow to sit on when I go back to the "real world" and put some money aside for a house or stay where I'm at and work some shitty job that barely pays my bills but not miss school, friends, gf... etc.

I went to what I thought was a good job, and moved out and got my own house, im now 20 and wish I would've went to school to do what I wanted to do right out of highschool, but now I got too much debt to do that so me and my girlfreind both work. Trust me, go to school to do what you like, it will pay off.

I kick myself ever other day for not staying in school the first time.  Now I've got a family to take care of, bills to pay, a family business, and a healthy addiction to rhmt that eat up my time and money.  I keep saying 'next semester' and that was a few years ago.  It's much easier to stick with it the first time around then to step back into living the poor college life once you've stepped up from it

+1 same for me except I took 8yrs off and regretted that decision. I'm a lot happier now with just A.S. in Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics.
I had a job drop in my lap that was hell of a lot better than selling parts for the rest of my life after graduation.  ;D

Now I have my own office, parking space, business cards, and no fucking groumpy customers coming into my store or the dealing with stupid retail problems.

I regret having a lack of focus or not being able to be disciplined enough to finish something at school, instead of just having 3 "first" years. I am in a position now that requires a "degree" but my failed business was enough school that I was accepted. My employer is well aware that at most they will get 5 years out of me before I will be off doing my own thing again, but they are happy to get 5 good years. I am an imperishable student, just not at a recognized school.

I am not nearly as smart, or as bright, or whatever as a lot of you, I just go further out of my way to learn things.

Stay in school, I graduate In June, the past 4 years have had its ups and downs, but I stuck with it and they are going to give me a piece of paper that tells the rest of the world what a bad ass I am for it.

I know if you leave school here, or decrease your attendance to less than full time, when you return you have to follow that years handbook. IE, classes you weren't required to take before, now you might have to. Stick it out, be broke like the rest of the world, you've got plenty of time to work when you're older.
