EXCESSIVE oil consumption
« on: January 10, 2012, 04:47:56 PM »

heres the story put a new head on to replace the cracked shitty head.
Didnt smoke before the head was put on(smoked like a bitch when it cracked but was white not blue.
Besides the head eliminated every emissions component on the engine(including replacing the pcv system with a catch can.

Now it uses about a qt oil oil per hour of operation regardless of engine speed or load.
Runs awesome just smokes like 007

Possible when i got the new head someone had cracked a valve seal when they put it together?(head was complete only had to bolt on acc.)
Motor has a really long stroke(2.5L) and was thinking that without vac in the crankcase it might cause it to use some oil but this seems extreme.

Thoughts?

i have yet to have a valve seal cause smoke after startup. try putting a vacuum on the crankcase and see if that helps. doesnt sound likely to me though. do a compression test

If the intake valve seals or guides leak, the intake's constant vacuum will suck oil into the ports. The PCV won't put enough vac on the crankcase to avert that. Leaky exhaust valve seals will just make it smoke on startup after it sits a while.

Was the replacement head new or used?

Head was a brand new casting. I am stumped. The tail pipe is coated in oil not like oil residue but moreso if you poured oil in the exhaust. Would a possibly stuck ring pack cause this?? I would think with this much oil being used it would start to miss eventually if you let it idle for a long time.

Coated on the inside or outside?

Head torque properly? Oil leaking on the backside of vc or oil filter have a damaged o-ring seal?

Sounds like d15 syndrome, replace head/headgasket = burn oil.

Is it a sentra?

Do a compression test. It will eliminate some variables.

Speaking of head gasket, did you put it on wrong? On some motors it's possible if you don't look close.

is it a QR25?

Those do all sorts of fun things, like eat pieces of the cat, suck them back into the cylinder, and ruin the bores.  Also, screws fall out of the secondary throttle plates in the intake mani and get ingested by the engine.

A compression test can't hurt to do.

I am pretty sure he is talking about the 2.5l in his Dakota that he was going to boost, but not now.  :noel:

Yeah, about that. If you put it in your trash compactor will it fit in your recycle bin?

The motor? Idk its got an iron block.  O0

Did a compression test everything was within specs with the cyl that sucked in a bit of coolent a little lower. I am going to put a pcv valve on it see if that helps otherwise just got 20+ gal of oil for free so it should last me a month or 2  :mexi:

Think we've all rocked cars with self changing oil at one point or 5.
