vw golf? fan switch diagram
« on: February 05, 2012, 10:52:58 AM »

Anyone have a schematic or something for a vw cooling fan circuit?

I have a radiator switch, think its from a golf maybe 90ish.
It has 3 wires
Thick red
Thick red w white stripe
Thin red with yellow stripe.

I'd like to use it to turn on my second rad fan.
Do vw's use this switch to activate a relay, or do these run the fan direct.

If no schematics anyone know where each wire goes?

Thanks.

Why not use a relay tapped off your 1st fan to kick on the 2nd? Many OEM's run it right off the switch since the fans draw low power. My guess is that relay has a ground pin along with pins that complete a normally-open circuit. You'd have to check continuity between pins (and ground threads) when cold and when hot.

My car doesn't have any fan as of now and I'm planning on wiring a relay to the stock switch. May just throw a second relay. I have a couple stock Honda and gm ones lying around.

I'm doing the vw full width rad and needed this to fill the hole, figured I might as well use it.

googled on my lunch break and I had better luck finding some info than on my phone.

looks like it might be a dual temp switch judging from the schematics I found.
Red to Red/Yellow should close around 95C
Red to Red/White should close around 105C

These are just guesses i'll have to get throw it in a pot on the stove and see what happens.

The schematics I found without AC show the low temp contact connecting battery power to a resistor on the fan for low speed.
The high temp contact connects battery power directly to the fan for high speed.
The fuse on the schematic is marked as 30A so this thing should handle my fan with no relay, no problem.
