CRX brake upgrades
« on: February 05, 2012, 03:47:33 PM »

So when I first started working on cars I skipped over all the jdm bullshit and only did shit to make my car faster.
Well since Iv been working on the rex again. Iv been at the junk yard allot lately.
Its a 90 dx CRX

So today I pulled a set of 01 teg rear disc/ 1" m.c. /booster and 40/40 prop valve for $150.
I know Im gonna have to bend the lines for the m.c. and everything else should be direct swap.
From what Iv read  DA fronts should be a direct swap minutes a couple degrees camber. You can use DA calipers on EF EX rotors and they bolt up.

Heres the questions. Im going back tomorrow to get the whole front DA set up, should I just snatch just the calipers  and lines and try to find a set of ex spindles? Any problems with what I have going so far? Any better setups that can be had on the cheap?

there is all kinds of problems with what you posted...

calipers... DA = EX
rotors... DA = EX
knuckles... DA < EX

EX 15/16" MC is a direct swap. but if i wasnt lazy as shit, i probably would do a DC MC swap also.

one think i have noticed is that DA knuckles are also heaviyer than Civic knuckles...

also, credit to AJ for posting, you can use ITR.accord wagon or V6, CRV, Vigor, TL, Legend whatever calipers w/ 07ish MINI Cooper (excluding all special models/trims) rotors for a bolt on 11" rotor combo (for DC/DA/EX)

Every search kept taking me back to honda tech and I don't trust shit I read there.

Nah, the DA knuckles work perfectly.

 ::)

Yes they bolt on, but so do a bunch of other knuckles.  Running bigger brakes on the DX/Si knuckles isn't exactly difficult anymore.

are EX knuckles really that difficult? i have had many sets over the years, passed on just as many... its off a civic, it will work 100 fuckin % with no worries. plus im pretty damn sure they are lighter than DA shit.

Probably varies geographically.

I have owned two sets, and passed on pulling at least one set.  I do not go to the yards often at all.

Brian, why don't you hook me up with those dx spindles if you get some ex spindles.

I had to stick some eg dx spindles on my std in a pinch so I could run normal axles, but the camber is shitty. I have 13" wheels for my slicks so I have to run small brakes.

I wish I could take credit for that, but JD was the one that originally posted it. I just whored out the post because I don't think anyone even looked at it but me.

Then they are probably Hf or STD brakes.

EDIT:  I thought that STD brakes were smaller, but haven't dounf hard evidence of that.

My std brakes are the same as her dx brakes, but she has standard size axles so they aren't std spindles. Her car is 100% stock, I doubt anyone has been swapping any parts.

calipers:  DX = STD
knuckles: HF = STD

90-91 CRX Si had slightly larger brake pad/calipers than 88-91 DX/STD and 88-89 Si.

Why not put the DX knuckles on the EX???

My 91 had the knuckles sold off it and 6g knuckles installed when it was slammed. Once I raised it up, back to DX/Si setup, no problems.

Makes sense. I have always had 91 si's.

Iv been contemplating it. The only thing is I like my ex and I need some stopping power when I put a b18 in it.

Extra stopping power for a B16?

 :?:

I know a lot of people find it hard to believe, but good brake pads make a huge difference.  The brakes on my turd CX were scary as fuck when I bought it.  Fresh rotors and some Hawk HPS pads made an incredible difference.

Are you planning on stopping from 100+ several times in a row or some shit?

I have experienced what more brakes than tires can do by accident.  It ruins tires, and doesn't stop you any sooner.

Ive done the same. It fucking sucked. Tires had less than 1000 miles on them b4 I flat spotted those fuckers. Man I was pissed!

I did it on what I can only describe as a rail slide going around a corner in the "mountians" in northern Arkansas.

Down to the cords, and there was at least 90% tread on those tires.  They were Falken 912s though, so it isn't like the tires themselves were a big loss.

That was an expensive ordeal between the ticket, and getting tow new front tires ASAP.  Lesson learned.  Don't ever try to drive 10/10ths on open public roads, and get better rubber when running big brakes.

its not like he is throwing 6 piston brembo calipers and 12" rotors on his crx. its stock brakes from a car that weighs 200lb more than the one they are going on. its not going to make a huge difference

With RE-11s, and 10.2 brakes with HPS pads, I can still easliy overpower the tires.
