i finally just broke down and bought another computer and now i want to buy an mp3 player for the music ive got stock piled. i really like ipod touchs and i want one but i also like the idea of unlimited downloads with the zune software. i know you have to pay for it but that not that big of a deal to keep me out of trouble with my internet company.

does anyone own a zune? how do you feel about it? use the software im assuming? ever compared the two first hand? id post porn but im at work

Zune is a bit more "open" and supports more formats, unless you go with an older generation ipod that you can install different firmwares on (I can't remember the names).

I'd look at the archos stuff personally. They had some really nice media players that had a whole lot more features for the same price.

Archos 405/605/705 are cheap and do a lot.

Depends what you want really...I'd probably choose the zune over ipod if I had to buy one though.

I own an ipod... get a zune. You don't have to deal with ipod's DRM bullshit, you can just drag and drop files like a hard drive.

I have an 80gb Zune, would never get an IPOD. The best thing to do with a Zune is download "Zune Explorer Enabler" so you don't have to use their software at all. I haven't tried that with Vista though.

I've been happy with my zune so far. I have had one sense day 1. The software has gotten much better latly. It used to be really slow. I do like the fact that I just pay a set price/month and get almost anything I want. There are a couple stuck up bands that dont like technology or have a stick up their ass that you can't get but they are few and far between. I just figure if they dont want to play like everyone else is, then I'll just pirate their shit and they still wont get my money. I have been happy with mine though. works great.

ive had my zune for a couple years now. works fine for me. It's one of the original ones so it's a bit chunky.

I have a 1st gen Ipod Nano, only because I traded it for pressing LS rods onto some pistons. 2 mins of work.

Otherwise I'd suggest you get something that's easier to drag & drop w/o special software (Itunes). I really hate fucking with playlists, in addition to the fact it sucks with certain ID3 tags AND you need to enter a credit card # in order to get album covers for your songs.

I've had the 30gb Zune when it came out, sold it and bought the 80gb the month it came out. Couldn't be happier. There is a registry hack where you don't have to use the software @ all, however the newest updated software is pretty decent (the version before sucked ass). I listen to mostly obscure bands and most of the shit I want is on their marketplace, however one draw back is that some albums are on there for a limited time and you'll lose your music. Lost my whole Government Issue discography. There is a nice feature about the subscription though, every month you get 10 free songs of your choice to keep for good.

The wi-fi is where its at though. You can sync your zune wirelessly as long as its plugged into a power source. I keep my zune hooked to the surround sound in the living room and my laptop is in the bedroom, everything just syncs up periodically. Also if you are sitting at McDonald's and feel like hearing a song, you can connect to the marketplace from your device (no laptop necessary) from any Wireless network and listen to whatever you want just like your own custom radio station.

Another cool feature is that when listening to the FM tuner and the radio station has a digital code (tells you what songs are playing) if you hear a song you like, you can queue the song and download it later when you sync up to your home PC.

If you have an Xbox 360 connected to the wireless network, you also have your WHOLE music library at your disposal including playlist. You can have all your music on your PC and never have to fill up your Xbox HDD space.

Sharing is kind of a cool feature when you are away from any wireless network and your buddy has a few songs you wanna hear BAD. Sucks they only last for 3 days though.

Yes, it plays just about any format. Doesn't matter where the songs come from. If I remember correctly, it can't play the itunes format though.

My 360 is plugged into the router.

I bought the zune when it first came out. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that ipods burn out after a while, my friend has been through 3. Zune has been going strong all along.

Anyone who thinks they have to use iTunes bloatware on their iPod is an ignorant dildo. I used Winamp on my 2G Nano, and I'm sure it works just fine on the later units too.

The only person I know with a Zune likes it a hell of a lot more than any of the multiple iPods his wife has owned (she keeps losing them). It means nothing to me, I'm buying a Sanza Clip after using the gf's for the last week. This thing is dead nuts simple, nice interface, great sound quality with some $10 Phillips headphones, excellent battery life, not scratch prone, and costs thirty dollars. My only complaint is it's a little too small, but since I turn it on and hit play (instead of jukebox-whore around) I can get over it.

seems like everyone is leaning towards the zune and i think thats where im going . if the zune had a littbe bit sleeker design like the touch and wifi internet id be a done deal. those are the only things im tossing around still. that and jailbroken 3rd party apps for the touch like: the guitar , and sketch and shit

A touch is a different ball game. Gotta wait a bit for a touch screen zune, although I've head rumours of one being in development.

I'd possibly have an interest in the iPod touch...if it had more memory. 16-32gb just won't do me much good.

I have a big 6G ipod classic at home, but lately I've just been using my phone to stream music from my home PC. Not good on battery life, but it's alright when you don't need it to stream all day.

I use my phone as an MP3 player just use a SD micro works great.

I also have a phillips MP3 player $30 usd hold enough music for me.

+1, 4GB of music is more then enough for me. I typically only have 1-2gb of music on it at anyone time anyway.

Yep, and I bought my 8gb microsd card for $15 about 6 months ago, so memory is really dirt cheap if using your phone is an option.
