Newerish car - Evo my best bet?
« on: April 04, 2012, 02:46:53 AM »

I'm looking for more an all-around car here, this seems to be good at everything. I'm looking in the $15-20k range at 40-60k mile cars. I'm curious if any other car can give it a run for the money, or if they'll be heaping piles at this point. ATM I'm also thinking about a 350Z.

I have no intentions for kids and gas milage isn't an issue, but I also don't like cars much heavier than these. I prefer a faster car and all I need for luxury is a decent seat, radio, and power windows.

Anything to look out for? Anything better? I haven't really been looking into cars under 10yrs old for a long time.

What I like about the 350Z is that most of them didn't see winter at all (maybe not a problem for you) and people don't drive them a lot.

They are all low km car and they look very nice and classy :noel:

That's my next car for sure  ;DDD

vette or s2000!  350'z are slow pigs and garbage and evo's are boring and every other person drives one at least down here.

I vote s2k, then evo. I like the evo9, buddies has one, but it needs a clutch that's worth a shit. Stock one slips with stock power. It needs a twin disk which is some coin. As for s2k. Lower it a touch, put some good brake pads on it and a hard top and rock the fuck out! Oh, then boost it!

You won't get an Evo worth having in that price range. Here in Florida, to get one stock in that milage range you are at $24k minimum. Anything cheaper has been beat to shit or is too old to finance. A co-worker wanted to buy my 07 SI sedan. At the same time I paid off the Matco truck that comes by. I figured I could swing an Evo, but I was wrong. I pay $245mo for my SI and $120mo on the Matco truck. That combined is still almost $200mo short of an 08-09 clean Evo.

I'd be torn between S2k and Evo. I'd probably get an Evo though as a boosted awd is just too much fun.

you driven both? then you wouldnt want an S2000, and you would buy an EVO.

vote:  Evolution VIII-IX-X (RS/GSR)

i would own one right now, but i just dont want payments.... so Galant VR4 for a while. got must of what i wanted from an EVO, and for at least 13k less buy-in price (but like they said probably 15-18k less for a decent car).

For $26k I can get an 04 with a shit-ton of parts on it:

Quote
2004 mitsubishi evo 8- $20000.00 ams 2.3rr stroker kit block kit- $15499.95 drive shaft shop 900hp front axles- $850.00 shep racing stage 3 trasfercase- $2500.00 shep raceing rear diff- $1400.00 ams fuel rail- $185.00 injector dynamics 2200 cc injectors- $1000.00 head games head complet stage 3- $3500.00 rev 3 intake manifold- $800.00 jm fabrications custom made intercooler piping- $1200 slowboy racing front mount intercooler- $1300.00 jm fabrications oil catch can- $80.00 stance stage 3 coilovers gr+3- 3200.00 exedy twin disc hd clutch- $1700.00 shep racing stage 3 transmission- $2500.00 enkie nt03 rims plus powder coating- $2400.00 fp black turbo- $2000.00 busher racing double pumper fuel pump- $600.00 apr fuel filter- $350.00 custom made rollcage- $2000.00 voltex side skirts- $850.00 voltex rear defuser- $800.00 yaris front lip- $500.00 2 bride racing seats- $5000.00 nrg quick release steering wheel and hub- $800.00 orgin rear wing- $1300.00 house of colors custom paint job- $6000.00 dnp exhaust maniifold- $600.00 dc motorsports 3" down pipe- $400.00 tomie titanium cat back exhaust system- $1200.00 aem true boost gauge and boost controler- $350.00 aem air fuel gauge gauge- $300.00 $81,664.95 in total

For some reason there's a lot of them in Chicago. I figure it this way: I get $10-15k financed and I can afford it if my fuel injector deal pans out. I put $5k down and reserve another $5k for A) upgrading/replacing shit on beater or B) more money down for a newer near-mint car. The link below is what I'd really want to get, but it's a bit out of what I'd be willing to pay, although I'd do it if they dropped to $20k. It has the VIN I used to get my insurance quote, and though it isn't pretty (an extra $1k/yr over current), I can still afford it while financing $10-15k @36mo. I actually paid more as a teen for liability only, to give you an idea.

lol, ricerish? Sure, but have you ever driven one? My bro's friend had one for 2 years, half that time was with a clipped stock turbo in the mid-400's, the other half with a shitload of Bucher Racing work making 650whp. I can tell you a CTS-V, no matter what you do to it, will ever be able to pull a 4-wheel drift around a freeway on-ramp loop at full boost. I felt like that kid was always trying to crash the car, but it never let him.

I've already looked at a lot of cars and I'm using autotrader as the common benchmark for prices. The cheapest V w/in 200 miles is $28k. For that I could get a bone-stock evo9 with a factory warranty, then add some minor bolt-ons and beat it in the quarter. I'd drive a wooden barrel with a wankle if it was faster than an evo in both a straight line and the corners.

I hate the sound or subbys, They sound like a Jeff Franks crx when ross took all the wires off of it and just ran 1 coil wire to 1 plug and the fucker acctually ran...lol On top of that the sti's are a fucking pig. They drive like a heavy car. The evo's  Iver driven feel much more agile and sharper.

I still vote s2k with boost and a 9"

I started watching Top Gear from the beginning and they recently showed the S60. In a nutshell they thought it sucked dick. Calling it a turbobrick would still be accurate, not because of shape but the way it corners.

I'm still fine DD'ing an old 94 teg, as well as a 95 turbo EG. I only need 2 things from a car - to get from point a to point b as fast as I want, and a cup holder.

You can buy an M5 or a CTS-V for that money. Also an SRT-8 300c or Magnum is in that range. I would think the roomier cars are better for a driver, but if you really don't give a fuck, you can buy a C5 Z06 for $20k these days too.

The M5's made in the last decade make me want to throw up, and they're also all over $25k. I found two z06's for ~$25k, but that's verging on impracticle. Plus both are above what I'm willing to spend. Same for CTS-V's. I also couldn't afford fixing anything major that breaks. The srt-8 isn't a good idea since I will never own a Chrysler product, except for the week it takes for me to give one away if I inherit one. If I wanted a big car, I'd get a used police intercepter and toss a blower on it.

I appreciate the advice, but it all goes against what I'm looking for in a car. I want a car I can make go fast in a line or a corner and is under 8yrs old & $20k. Otherwise I'll be find with a rhmt turbo kit on the teg, getting a decent suspension, and tossing in leather seats from some luxury car along with a garmin for navi. Insurance/payments will be far cheaper and I won't loose much money if I crash or sell it.
