diesel ricers
« on: May 01, 2012, 11:48:37 AM »

i'm thinking about getting a diesel truck, i like my hemi ram but it can't pull my trailer like i want it to, and gets about 10mpg doing it. i'm sick of the auto tranny shifting constantly while i'm towing.

what i really want is a 03/04 cummins ram with a 6spd. they cost more...

i have a chance at a 04 duramax 2500hd with allison trans for 9k, from what i read i would probably be happy with the allison and i could use the M mode if i wanted. the truck has 230k on it though... and the dude says blows smoke idling, but runs fine... he says its the injector seals and they are getting replaced, i know those years have a injector recall, and smoking is part of the symptoms. the guy says the head gaskets have been replaced.

fuel mileage while towing and reliability is most important, thats why i really want the cummins and 6spd. my father in law has one and gets around 20mpg towing a medium load, or unloaded. i'm heard dudes on the internets claim their duramax gets 20mpg unloaded and towing a small trailer... but lots of people say more like 15. 15 is not acceptable

what do you diesel ricers have to say about all this

03/04 cummins sweet but in my area WAY to much money....

Turbo diesel vans on the other hand are dirty cheap! 2-4k for 1 with under 150k

I thought your truck got 40mpg

yea it does but i want to be cool.

unloaded my truck gets on the highway around 17-18mpg depending on speed.

towing it gets horrible mileage, around 10 towing a 10ft enclosed trailer with three motorcycles and a bunch of gear

I've been looking at diesel trucks too. I've got a job lined up where i'll be traveling the country and I need a truck. I dont need to tow anything, though.

I got a 01 F250 with a 7.3l, it's a beast and will pull anything and get decent mileage if you keep it under 70mph.

my 04 6.0l powerjoke with arp studs, egr delete, no cat, 4" magnaflow exhaust, intake butterfly removed, and dj's diesel custom tunes works well for me.

Get to work.  Don't forget a stroker.  You can probably find everything you need to do this for under $3k.  I'm seeing ratty Comanches for under 1500, Cherokees are basically free, 4.2 parts and machining (or not), some D44's... build a truck.

I rented one of the newer generation F150s with a V8.  I managed about 19mpg driving like a grandma for most of the trip, except for the times I floored it to fuck around or pass someone.  It displays the average MPG.  Not sure if it's for that trip, or overall, or what, but it was at 16.3 when I got it, and 19.1 when I returned it.

My Mega slut does me well with the three kids and three dogs in the back.
2007.5 W/6.7L , All deletes, 5" TBE, Smarty S67ME w/90HP tune and a few other small things. It runs like my old 5.9L but with a metric shit ton more ass behind it.
Average 19.5 around town, 24-25 on the highway if I stay below 65-70 'ish

I bought a 03 2500 5.9 tonight for 15.5k... Finns pick it up tomorrow

I got a couple thousand more than I owed on my hemi so it was totally worth it 137k on it tranny about to go anytime probably.

I'm gunman buy a smarty Jr tomorrow for it. Get some more power and mileage.

When I test drove it computer was saying 25mpg at 60mph and almost 30 at 50mph. They aren't perfectly accurate but close enough.

On my way home was getting 15mpg at 60 with one motorcycle in back of my hemi.  >:(

The "finished" blue one turned out to be a photoshop.. but it really doesn't matter because it looks awesome and could be built.  I suppose if you wanted to you could put a Cummins in it, they're just really tall.

Shortbed 2wd Comanches are REALLY cheap.

If I didn't have this pos Tundra I would be tempted to put a short bed on my YJ.

I vote Honda Pilot.

I towed a 54 foot mobile home for Jonnys mom with mine.  Still got around 42 MPG with it and didn't even unhook the trailer before doing some serious off road mudding with it.

I am going to assume that he will say the Sr gives more adjustability,
Then i will further assume that he will say you are a retard if you do not use EFI Live.
