Car Alarms
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:53:36 AM »

so whos got car alarms out there?  i need one and have no idea how hard core the install will be and no idea what brands are good.

Is it worth me paying like 50-100 bucks to install it or what?  Just looking for keyless entry really, the alarm is just a perk i suppose.

yeah im thinking that as well but money is money and i dont have 120 to toss to someone for what might be 2-3 hours of work.

Its a Toyota 2001 4runner SR5.  and it does already have an alarm but i have no idea how old it is or if it works.  it came with no fobs so it might be unhooked for all i know.  that also has me thinking pay to install it cause i don't really want to rip it out and then install another one

apparently there was a brand that Toyota liked to tell all stealerships to use and naturally they went out of business like 4 years ago so replacement key fobs are non existent.  I have found a keyless entry setup locally from costco for like 35 bucks. i think im going to go with that as i wont have to fuck with the alarm setup thats in there.  Local spot wanted 129.99 to install JUST keyless entry.

35 sounds MUCH better.

If you install car alarms like I do, it's not going to worth your trouble to install it.  Routing wires, wrapping wires, hiding everything, takes way too much time.  But if you don't care for the stealthy-ness and a clean job.  It shouldn't take long.

I am by no means a pro installer, I just do my own stuff so don't quote me entirely on it.  But if you only care for lock and unlock, it's be a few wires (ground, constant 12v, lock/unlock, siren (stock horn you'll need to use a relay), more or less).  To install the whole alarm, you could probably get away with using like 10ish wires from the alarm system.  And if you don't care for it being super clean, you could just use these "Y" splicing things so you don't have to cut as many wires.

Also you can sometimes find people on craigslist that'll install alarms for like 80 bucks (in my area at least).  I just like saving money, 80 dollars for them to do it in 2 hours or 80 for me to do it in 8... 10 bucks an hour is more than minimum wage!  I'll do it myself.

I'm sure my input has helped you just as much if I didn't post.  But i went too far typing so I just continued.

You can usually find the lesser-range DEI systems, Avital instead of Viper, on ebay for ~$100 for a keyless 2-way remote start alarm. They're a bit less with less features, down in the $30's for keyless-only (no alarm). I get great range out of the 2-way pager, even through a concrete building. For $50-100 more, you can get the Viper with a bit more range but same features.

FYI those people that charge under $200 usually are going as fast as possible. It will look like multi-color spagetti after they're done, and any theif will defeat the system in 10 seconds. For that sort of install, it will take you a day off with a beer in your hand - if you research where the wires go.

The type of install I do to my cars is far better, although it takes far too long to get paid to do it for anyone else. You can't see any of the wires under the dash (anywhere, really), even the remote start wires are barely visible. I also move the main relay, add battery back-up, and swap the shock sensor for a radar/proimity sensor.
