Tomatoes on WRT54GS
« on: April 19, 2009, 04:25:04 PM »

I know there are bigger dorks than me on here so im hoping one of you uber haxors can help me.  My range sucks on my WRT54gs so i was trying to reflash it with tomato so i can bump hte stock 19 Mw to something a little tougher so it will reach my garage.  I get just enough to connect but not enough to actually do shit. Any who i keep getting "Updates are failed"when trying to flash this bitch and most everything im reading is straight forward.  Can anyone point me to a better interface than tomato or perhaps a good BIN for a WRT54gs?

I've used DD-WRT on several WRT54G's. Never tried tomato.

Alright im trying DD-WRT but as soon as I clicked Upgrade once i told it which file to use it immediately said "Updates are failed" again so i don't have high hopes.  How did you guys flash it?  Im logging in and doing a Firmware upgrade thought the admin console.

Yup same shit.  I get updates are failed like right after i click a bin (Ive tried like 7 now between tomato and DD wrt) and after i click continue it goes and does its thing and gives me a pop up that says the same and then hangs and wont finish.

Is there some sort of setting i need to disable or something?

Truth.

Go to the "Supported Hardware" link on their page, type in your model number (found on the bottom of the router), and it'll give you step-by-step instructions on flashing it.  MUCH easier than the hoops you had to jump through to figure it out last time.  They spoon-feed it to you now.

get a better antenna. Also, software alone is not going to increase the power output very much.

Yup.  They'll let you set insane power levels, but there's a limit to how high you can go before you get diminishing returns.  Power level can get "out of range" to generate a useful signal and you just get unconnectable garbage.

Right now I have a dd-wrt linksys on one side of the apartment with high gain antennas, and another dd-wrt linksys in my room with high gain antennas bridged.

Yeah im pretty sure i just bricked it.  I get nothing now when i use it.  I have to go put weed in my face now or i may murder things.  Im going to try again.  7 dollars worth of plastic will not defeat me.

Pipe down peewee and try reading I thought at first it was Firmware related but now obviously my router has issues.  It is the 6 year old Version 7 but i figured it would handle it fine.  Im flashing the damn thing and broke it doing so.

Sorta funny how you say if i cant flash with out my hand held i should be doing so.  Would it be fair to say since you cant figure out how to wrangle Pussy with or without your hand held perhaps you should stick to wrangling mens penile regions?

Yeah, you can't update them like that.  Most require an interim flash with a vmware remover before flashing with whatever replaces it.  If you read up on the subject you'd understand this.

Yah, 84mW is the max before signal starts distorting.  I don't trust anything past 40 mW as they die quick with the power turned up.  Putting heatsinks on the chips, and a case fan, great ideas.

The newer versions seem to have a higher stock level.  The recent two I flashed were at 70mW.  If you need more range just find another cheap linksys router, some cans, and use it as a bridge or repeater.

Yeah it helped but didnt solve my problem, i can connect and join my network but of course its so slow you wanna shoot yourself lol.  My my toolbox is large and at the angle the signal has to sorta go through or around my water heater then toolbox and then to the PC.

So really i need a better anntenna or move the router to a central point in the house as its all the way on the other side.  I will probably do a little of both, as i need to run some cable anyway.  Time to put cable in the garage and i want s video behind the living room tv so i guess i need to do it now instead of when its hotter. I just hate runnin cables lol but now i got an excuse.
