My next project; RAV4-T.. suggestions & opinions needed
« on: April 20, 2009, 03:03:36 PM »

As some of you may know, I'm a father now. So I will be looking to purchase either a Toyota RAV4 or something similar for carrying the baby around, and spending less on my hondas. Most likely we will sell the hondas and get 2 96-99 model RAV4's

Here's my idea; Toyota RAV4  4-wheel drive 3G-FE 2.0L forged 8:1 pistons, megasquirt or a 3S-GTE ecu, with a properly sized (small) turbo.

here's a few questions I have before I jump into it.. is it possible to lock up the 4WD so it acts like real-time AWD?

are there any problems with the 3G toyota gear box holding 350wtq? i'd like to be able to pull a 30 ft. boat out of the water if I get a boat.

Has there been any success in modifying OBD1 chipped honda ecus into OBD1 Toyota cars? I've heard people mention it.

The engine wont be the problem.  What you will run into is drivetrain failure.  Stock trans/drivetrain components resemble that of a d-series civic, only you have a significantly heavier vehicle.  It will work for a while, but you can kill a stock gearbox in the snow, turbo wont help.

FWD with an mr2/celica turbo trans wouldnt be any problem, or if you get crazy and find all-trac drivetrain + fab to make it work.  All trac drivetrain are fucking crazy overbuilt.  The input shaft is the same diameter as the r154 supra turbo trans.

odb1 toyota chipping is so far behind the times its nothing more than a waste. However, quite a few 3s powered cars are running obd1 honda ecus/dizzy.  Im too lazy to find the thread on PGMFI, but its there. Rawr was also working on this for his car...

well, hell.. I don't have to worry about snow here in FL. maybe I could beef up the drive terrain a bit without a whole fab swap.

Are you seriously considering pulling a 30' boat with a Rav4?

4WD turbo, good torque. why not?  but the drive terrain is the only issue i see with this whole project.

The drive train is the least of your worries thoughs RAV4s are not built to more than 2,500 lbf and unless this a 30' aluminum boat with nothing it I see problems here.

And do not for get the brakes on the RAV4 is not designed to stop close to twice its weight.

Luckily you live in Fla. where you only have small hills. ;D

I would be hesitant to pull an empty 30' boat trailer with a rav 4. An average 30' boat max's out the CGVW on my 1 ton dodge. Good luck with the tongue weight and finding a Class IV or Class V weight distribution hitch for a rav 4. The class 3 hitch that you typically see on a rav4 when you load a 30' boat will sink until the rav is on the bump stops.

If you take a drivetrain off of an alltrac celica that's in good shape to put it on a rav 4, I will shank the fuck out of you.  :)

As well as handling that boat will push the rav4 around like a toy. You will kill or injure someone pulling a 30' boat on the highway with a fucking rav4.

Pulling a 95 EX with a v6 Ranger was bad enough. Even a 26' boat on a F-250 has issues. I agree, drivetrain will be the issue. An AWD version will overstress the transfer case, and a FWD version will get no traction. Trust me, I've seen some tools use minivans for the wrong application before. That's all assuming the enigine doesn't melt - occational boost is one thing, cruising at 5psi is another story (with a bad ending).

Back to the turbo - why not get the competing model to the Rav4, the CR-V? You have a decent motor, the trans can take some abuse, and boosting it will not be difficult. Worst-case you can convert it to a normal B-series FWD setup with some work.

Overall, I rate you idea with a D-. Nothing with a turbo can really get an F, fyi. :P

just buy a jdm 3sgte and awd tranny, bigger turbo and your set. they use a 3sfe so it should bolt right in. if you get an st205 drivetrain they are full time awd.

btw you have a 3sfe not a '3gfe'? right now, 2L 16v with the economy head, pretty sure the cams are drivin off of one sprocket as well. 3gfe would infer it having a g head (performance high valve angle) and an f head (economy)

I think all cop cars need to have turbo. nbspnbsp Then they would understand the necessity of putting your foot down and how uncontrollable the urge is to fucking rail on that shit.

The alltrac drivetrain wont bolt right in.  Last time I checked a 3sgte longblock is a nice chunk of change, not including the drivetrain.  And you still wont get away from the cracked crankshaft problem.  Might as well use the significantly cheaper and easier to find 3sfe if its to be done.  Or build a 5sfe for more CC's.

3sfe is fine for boosting.  Vavle angle wont hurt him that much in a boosted application.  Remember, the fantastic 1uz is an F head too.
