making exhaust quiet?
« on: April 28, 2009, 09:50:13 PM »

i have an Apex-i N1 cat back for my Integra running NA status, and it just sounds like ass. with or without the silencer (restrictor) in it.

im sure the car would be quieter without the muffler on all together. im 95% sure the muffler is making the noise. so any ideas on how to maybe modify the muffler to make it quieter without fuckin it up? anyone hear of anything like this before on N1 style mufflers?

oh yeah the B-pipe has a resonator in it! infact its the same on my N1 and WS2 exhausts (running the N1 B-pipe and WS2 muffler right now)...

or should i just make a new 3" exhaust for my car lol

turbo it, that will make it quieter

/thread

Or put 3 long ass glasspacks under the car, and a muffler, and a turbo, like I did. That makes it pretty quiet. Adding a catalytic converter to slow you down will make it a lot qieter/less raspy too. Turbo muffler make shit quiet, but they're a lot more restrictive than a wide open muffler, like the magnaflow I run. That said, I'll be changing to a turbo muffler one day just to make it silent instead of quiet. (sleeeeeper)

Converters go a long way to keeping it quiet. Before my CRX died I just had the cat and the cheapest exhaust possible on it. 1.5" salvaged from a GM of some kind welded to what was left of the paceshitter pipes on it.

ok... i can shot down all those.

dont need a Greddy SP, i already have a WS2 exhaust on my car (looks/sounds like stock muffler). the problem with that is the N1 makes noticeably more power. this baffled muffler shit is killing hp and lots of top end.

turbos are for other cars not this one. most turbo cars dont have this problem, and i know that, thats why this is in the hybrid forum.

i never said i didnt have a converter?

there is a big resonator in the exhaust already. not gonna be able to put much of a bigger one in there, and with the design of the car/exhaust system, you can only run the one + a muffler.

I didn't know if you had a catalytic converter... As for the resonator, glasspacks are quieter. Swap it out. And believe me, "nobody" runs more than one glasspack/resenator/silencer on a miata, except me, the dude that stuffed 3 22" core glasspacks under the car somehow. It didn't fit, I made it fit. But it's quieter than any 3" exhaust on any miata, and I have no catalytic converter. There's like a total of 74" of fiberglass core total for sound damping.  :somb: :noel:

The muffler's not making the noise, NA Hondas are just plain loud.  That being said I doubt it's helping the noise any, just shifting the pitch of it a little deeper.  You would notice the difference, in fact unbolt the axle back portion and see for yourself.

If you introduce any restriction in the system it'll make a pretty decent hit in power.  Chambered muffler, smaller diameter exhaust, etc.  Because that's all a quiet exhaust is, a restriction.  Power and loud are one and the same.

A Moates 2timer hooked to one of Hi-Profile's E-cutouts is the way I'd go.  Trigger the E-cutout and tune with TPS, and have a pea shooter stock muffler for the fuel efficient part throttle cruise.

i have a quiet Apex-i WS2 exhaust, its KILLING my power. i have an annoying loud Apex-i N1 exhaust, kits annoying and makes ricer noises.

i bought my old CRX 3inch exhaust back (well i got it for free/labor), was going to cut it up to put in my R, but might just be easier to make a new one, and just put this on my wagovan.

STILL putting on a 3inch: what is a good resonator that isnt gonna kill power? the one on the CRX exhaust is perfect, but i dont know what kind it is, nor does the guy that made it. also planning on running a Vibrant muffler. then just ordering a piping kit from Columbia River bending...?

at the very least its not going to be louder than the N1, and it wont be ricer looking like the N1...?

I always use the $20 thrush turbo mufflers from any parts store to make a car quiet.
It worked great for my accord. and it didn't kill to much power off either.

lol!  I had the same problem with my 2.5" exhaust with a buddy club spec II "muffler" and a test pipe.  Sounded like a sfwd race car.

I put on a restricting ass cat and a triple loop muffler with a crush bent 2" piping for the axle back.  A lot quieter, but def a loss in power.  I just wanna get a stock itr muffler.  I can sacrifice the power for the quiet cause I live in Cali :(

The cheapo Dynomax turbo style mufflers flow quite well and quell most of the noise.

Moroso Spiral Flow muffler.

We have used it on a couple of exhaust systems, and it seems to work out really well.

i need a muffler:

i require the exhaust to have a stock look/feel to it. i already have a resonator im going to use. its a louvered (i think) 48inch long piece. will take up most of the strait section of exhaust under the car. i just need a muffler to terminate the exhaust.

Of the Moroso?

Dr you you want the more rowdy combo or the quiet combo?

I also have a Dynomax super turbo mated to a 2.25" Thrush glasspack.  Thankfully they got away from the horrible louvered core nonsense on the glasspacks.

Dunno if I can get a hold of a camera to take some vids.
