Thoughts on baller ass turbos
« on: December 23, 2012, 10:18:46 PM »

This thought might be somewhat of a pipe dream, but I'm wanting to do some planning for if/when I max out this 60-1 I just put on the grm car. Everything I have read says the 60-1 runs out of steam in the 500-550whp range. It will be great for the grm challenge and the few IFO's I will get to this year. I'm thinking I may want to break into the 9's one day.  I can recommend turbos all day for stock block cars and fast street cars, but I'm lost when looking past this turbo.

I'm thinking at that point, a T4 twin scroll turbine housing is probably the way to go, but have no clue what size. Kinda taking a guess of a .88 a/r twin scroll t4.

I was originally thinking holset, but with any oem turbo, there will be some sort of compromise. If I get into a financial situation to buy a perfect turbo for my car, I will.

Damn, the 6262 is cheaper than I expected. I thought I checked once and it was $1300.

I need to check into vbands. I have only bought them as a kit, never used one directly on a turbo, don't know where to get the other flange and clamp

Go here: http://www.aptuning.net/Garrett_GT_Journal_Bearing_s/50.htm

Or try a CDM GT35. Due to the cost, a Holset will probably be your best option.

500-550 will get you into the 9's.  Work on your suspension and driving, faggot.

My suspension is solid for the current power level. Next time I get to the track ill crank it to nog and see if its still good. I know suspension setup is almost more important than the hp to get the time. My launch could use some work, but my driving is solid once the car is moving. I'm thinking a bit into the future right now, I can't get a $20xx challenge car into the 9's without a lot of budget objections. So, I plan to start aiming for 9's after this years challenge. I do really hope to see 10's next time out though.

so whats your best time at the track?

Invest in a go pro, and slap that bitch to the side of your car and point it at your wheels and do some suspension tuning with.

Best time is 12.5/ 1.7 60' at 14psi on a worn out eBay t3/to4e. Broke my traction bar so I couldn't raise the boost any.

Got a JK traction bar now and put the 60-1 on. I'd like to touch 10's the way it sits right now.

Z6/vitara/eagles
Sewell ported head/delta 272-2
Home made top mount
3" hood exit exhaust
3" charge pipes
850cc injectors
23 M&H slicks

I picked up a go pro since my last trip to the track.

I ran a 6262 two seasons ago, until a few chunks of Vitara went through it. :( It was a great turbo that I didnt get to push its limits on. Cheap ass intercooler.

Building around an S366 with a .91 T4 twin this year. We should see how it works out come spring.

I'm pretty set on twin scroll when the time comes. I'm going to push this 60-1 as far as it will go, then see where I am in life and what goals I have in mind.

Aren't there some major changes needed to the car safety wise once you hit 9.99?

9.99 or 135 you need 10 point cage (cert'd), window net, neck brace, etc. Most FWD will see 135 in the high to mid 10 range. Once you see 9s, you'll need a suit, gloves, boots, and licensing. Most FWDs will see 150 by the time they see 9s. At that point you'll also need a parachute.

I already had a 10 point myself. But I'll still be looking at 200+ for cert, 250? for license, plus physical (copay?), parachute, fire suit, etc. Probably another 2k just in added safety shit.

I know I can hit 9's once, but then what. Part out the car?i guess I could slowly add the safety stuff, but its crazy expensive to do at once.

I have no doubt my next trip to the track will be fast enough for a roll bar. With the small amount of power I was putting down last time, gaining a second wont be hard at all. Also working on some aero stuff.

HX52 is where it's at. Got a "rebuildable core" off ebay for $150 and it had so little shaft play it was practically non-existent. Awesome turbo. Guys have made over 700 easy. Some over 800.
