AWD Escort GT Build
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:32:01 PM »

Plans are to get this bitch completely assembled with the old motor then build a beast and shoot for 500whp. Mazda 1.8 BP engine. Driveline is celica GT4

Pics of old setup

Old Setup Ripper

http://youtu.be/ce2qFH4ezbQ

Old chassis - RIP

New Victim

Parts i've gathered so far.

Rear subframe built by pierce motorsports

Misc Celica GT4 Driveline parts

GT4 trans beside stock trans. No transfer in this pic

Actual trans

I turbo'd this car about a year ago for a buddy of mine using mostly stock gtx parts. Gonna rip all the turbo parts off and sell it as a kit hopefully.

Finally got to start on it yesterday. Got the bay all stripped. Almost ready to start fitting the drivetrain and fabbing up mounts.

Ordered an HX35 the other day. Brand new with a 12cm housing for $400. Ordering a clutch tomorrow.

Ya, it should be a pretty fun ride. Im hopin the hx35 will get me to at least 450 uncorrected. Gonna run a true divided topmount so it should have similar spool to the hy35.

Clearfield which is in Central PA about 20 miles east of state college.

This is a Hx-35, 12cm hotside with a true twin scroll setup. Black lines are from last year when it wasnt twin scroll. Both sets of numbers are uncorrected. Also to note this year its on 30psi and last year it was 24 but if you look right as it gets into the power band its picking up around 100hp more!

I was just looking at that in your thread. Thats badass to be able to see an actual comparison of divided and undivided manifolds. I knew it would make a difference but not that much. Bet the crx is a blast to drive with that kind of power.

Think I might just go ahead and build the twin scroll manifold with twin gates and use the hy35 I have for now until I get the new engine built.

Anyone see a problem with doing this? Divided manifold on open turbine housing? It won't be ideal but I think it'll be alright.

It will work fine. I don't see it hurting anything. But it won't make as much power as a hx35 because it will choke on the top end because of the 9cm housing.

It is fun but has already tried to kill me :noel: needless to say I need suspension badly! Twin scroll and more boost, only other change was front facing Vs top mount manifolds.

Picked up a mint HX35. Brand new 12cm non-wastegated housing. Traded my hy35 even up for it  :noel:

The previous owner put the car in a ditch so the passenger frame rail was pushed. Got it set up on the lift and pulled it out yesterday.

So......i've been ordering some parts and trading some shit I don't need or want.

Traded the turbo motor that came out of this car for some 16" rota subzero's, a brand new dry zex kit and $300. Pretty good considering I was about to take it to the JY to get it out of the garage.

I think i'm gonna run a direct port dry setup and add fuel with the MS rather than converting it to a wet kit. Just gonna run like 75 on it until max boost is reach. Just to help it get off the line.

Based on an input to the MS, I can add PW to the injectors while the nitrous is active. Think this is a good idea or am I asking for holes in the pistons?

Yeah, you could just simply add fuel with the ms.  Go through megamanual and browse msxe forum.  You wouldn't be the first to do it.  On paper it should work the same as a wet kit.  You're adding fuel with the nitrous either way.

This is cool.  You're building the escort we should have gotten in the states but way better.  Rear subframe is fucking nasty!  Love it!

Actually, dude brought the kit and its wet and he didn't even know.  :noel:

Little Update. Starting to get some parts rounded up.

This headflange is sweet. I love the taper from oval to round.

Got the motor all the cleaned up. Put in an MBSP, all new seals and gaskets. Only pic I have though. Bottom end still looks brand new even after the pounding i've given it.

Welded in a bung for the oil pan. The last one got cracked in the wreck. Welding these cast pans is fun.

Oh.............and I grabbed this. Its already been upgraded with a 1hp DC motor, Variable DC drive and a quick change toolpost. Plan is to do a full cnc conversion with it and make cool shit!!

Did work.

Made a mount insert from delrin.

No good

Made a bracket to hold the turbo while I mock up the manifold.

Hopefully i'll get the manifold built this weekend and finally jam this thing down in its hole.

Started building the manifold today. Was hoping to have it all tacked up today but everything kept breaking. Foot pedal broke on tig. Brushes burn out on chop saw. Blew a contactor for my belt sander.  >:(

It was alot easier than building a 4 to 1 collector. I even went gangster on it and cut the angles by hand cause my chop saw broke.
