Carnage pics..
« on: January 06, 2013, 07:00:24 PM »

HI guys, a guy i know , sleeved his engine (i think it's the first honda engine sleeved here  :noel:) , i had him get the block sleeved from USA since they sleeved many honda engines already..but he send to a local shop who made the job, runing with a big turbo, but breaked engine up about 900miles only runing NA engine, everything was "ok" until installed turbo and was runing only 6 psi.. since he hasnt much experience, installed a wrong head gasket to the actual bore of his engine, then last week blew head gasket, i told him that looks like problem is with sleeves.. p2w, supposed to be in 0.008mm , forged pistons and rods of course..

N1 cylinder and piston

N2

N3 that "blew" completely

N4

Shop said problem was blew head gasket, coolant then blew the engine..

i think problem was with sleeves, ive repaired many engines with blew head gaskets and that problem never happens with oem parts..

another guy said problem was engine wasnt making enough power then that was the problem too  ::)

I would like to read what do you thinks since some of you guys have experiencie with sleeved engines but i keep problem wasnt blew head gasket.

Let me know!  :)

Edit: engine is F22 with F18 Vtec head.. 6262 turbo w/ darton sleeves.

Looking at the instructions on how easy it is to install a Dartons, machine shop would have to totally stupid to get it wrong.

But it is possible.  :?:

Check flatness of the block deck that will tell you if the sleeves were installed wrong, or moved up or down.

Did anybody double check the bore and the piston to wall clearance?

Some of the machine shop local to me will not measure pistons, number them and bore and hone the cyl. for that piston to meet P2W asked by customer.  :noel:

If it didn't get run super hot, my thoughts are P2W was too tight. Managed to be ok till a little boost heated up the pistons.

P2w was to tight,

Forged slugs expand more than oem cast.  You need to leave room for when you start making power(heat/pressure).

Another problem is most piston makers (and machine shops) are used to OEM-sized turbos, and size P2W accordingly. That compressor wheel is larger in diameter than most "mechanics" would expect the entire turbo to be. P2W has to be doubled for forged pistons, which makes things worse.

p2w, turbo added heat which cause the pistons to expand more then if the motor was n/a. This is why I rather ran a loser p2w in a turbo motor. HG looks fuck but it would have caused this.

.008mm = .000314"

That Piston to wall is way to tight, even for na.

Should have been somewhere between .08mm  = .00314"(which is still tight for the boost the 6262 is gonna make)

I would shoot more for .11mm - .13mm  (.004" - .005") because its forged and a larger piston motor. If it were a sleeved d16 you could probably get away with .003"

Check your sleeve hight against your block height and make sure a sleeve didn't drop at all. Then new pistons, and have the machine shop bore and hone your sleeves to the proper piston to wall clearance. .004" - .005"

It will be noisy on start up, but quiet down a little bit after warm up.

What this CRX-selling failure said.

.0035" (INCHES, WALTER) is light rattle when cold, quiet when warm, and great for 450ish.
