rHMT dirrtbike thread
« on: January 23, 2013, 03:34:47 PM »

Long story short, some friends have been bugging me to go riding... I have a motror to build and dont have 3K for a 450 F... Buddy had this 97 KX250 in his garage as a backup. Told me If I didnt come get it he was going to leave it in my driveway. He did.

Buddy wanted me to start riding with them.. He had this thing in his way. SO... Now its in mine...

400 dollar 1997 KX 250:

Already had:
Boysen Reeds
FMF Fatty gold pipe
Xtra paddle tire

Im in it so far:

Rear wheel bearings (They were fuccccked)
Air filter
Clutch lever
Trans oil (Cleaned the shit out of the box and checked the basket as its super grabby when cold... all good)
Grips
Silencer packing

A good cleaning...

Changed its old ass gas to Castor 927 and a half and half of Q16 (I had laying around) and 92  (It makes me hard THINKING about how good it smells). WOuld run good on the choke but die off it after warm. made sense... Ranon the choke so figured main jet was fucked up. After talking to Keith and my gut... Completely disassembled the carb and cleaned the fuck out of it (Main jet had a big chunk of shit in it).

Fired her up and its a mean bitch. Stands straight up in 3rd with me standing on the pegs.

Forks are sprung light, so I have fucked with the dampening and well see how it is for now... Feels alot better they were diving hard. Dont seem so bad now. Ill deal with tha tlater. Rear susp is good.

Only thing left to do is bleed the front brake better (That or it needs the master seal replaced)  EDIT:  Ended up replacing the MC with a CRF 450 master with an ASV lever on it I got off Ebay. Bitch stops on a dime.

Got it like this

Pipe was beat to fuck, so welded the small end shut, made a coupler with a compressor fitting.... filled it with 50 PSI and blew the big ass dents out with some heat via MAP gas

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151081715645378&set=vb.639350377&type=3&theater

Fab new Pipe bracket:

cleaned up and good to go.

Im in it under 500 with new plugs  I bought

Currently full of Q16 and castor 927 Smells better than sex.  Loves me a 2 stroker smoker. Bitch is fast.

looks cool at least you got one new enough to have inverted forks even if it is steel frame.

i had a yz450f for a while that i raced last year. i ended up getting rid of it and now i have a cr250r. i like it more just because its lighter and you don't get tired so fast during the hard enduro races. even if the 450 is way faster.

I disagree, I came off a 4 stroke ktm, onto a ktm 300 2 stroke, the 2 stroke has been better in every way for woods riding.

Is the 300exc a lot smoother then the 380? I rode my uncles 380 and hated it, it hits way to hard when it comes on the pipe for a single track trail bike. I'd prefer a 4 stroke for pretty much everything. I hate that numbing feeling you get in your hands from 2 strokes, and the noise, and mixed fuel, and fucking with reeds...

Yes way smoother onto the pipe, and it will pull down below idle when lugging along in a slow technical section. There is more vibration then my 525 for sure. Also a tenth of the maintenance.

i like them all really as long as they have modern suspension. lol.

i like my cr250 better overall than my yz450r just because its lighter and lower to the ground, easier to control. plus my fat ass gets tired fucking with the 450. especially trying to get it started when its being a bitch

Where do you guys ride at?  That's a smoking deal on the bike, something cheap to get you into the hobby.  I have zero complaints about my crf450x, piped and jetted it's stupid fast, just doesn't tractor like my xr400.

yes you are right, its about $100 and 1-2 hours of work depending on how fast you do it.

BUT

when you're 20 miles in the middle of fucking no where and you lose compression for no apparent reason. that FUCKING SUCKS!

Shes done.

Put a new GRFX kit and gripper seat cover on it, new side plastics and a USFS spark arrestor... Also took the stock silencer since it was fucked up and shortened the can to FMF shorty length and perforated the core a bit more and repacked it. Noticable difference, comes on the pipe harder than the arrestor or Stock muffler but since I always ride somewhere I need a damn arrestor...  I just leave this one on  :O)

Also had to replace the clutch cable. Im in it under 780 total. Runs as good as it looks. Hasnt gone through a plug since I got the air screw and idle dialed in.

Stripped down new ANSWER SA PRO-2 installed

Graphics slapped on

Gripper seat cover done:

HMT/GFI SHORTY :O)

White sides:

LIttle startup vid... Just came off the choke so not all the way warmed up... Smokin like she should LOL. Decided to ride it to an AA  meeting a couple miles away since it was so nice out  :O)

It's never fouled one it runs good. I was 20 miles away and low on gas. I usually ride a little faster than that but still slow :)
