d15b7 blow up to D16z6 build
« on: February 05, 2013, 03:14:53 PM »

1995 Civic Lx 4 dr I picked up for $400 with a blown head gasket with about 250k on it, slapped on a new one and drove it for about 5000 miles NA for a while, intake with sweet heat shield, my $30 headers and that set up dynoed at a massive 67hp and 82 ft lbs to the wheels!

time for a change....

After being boosted for a little but this happened... due to a slightly warped head and all exhaust valves where burning, head got cleaned, decked and rebuild with new exhaust valves. also put in ARP studs

port matched z6 manifold with RC 370cc injectors

heres it all

for my custom water meth injection set up

specs:
stock d15b7 bottom end with about 250K miles
ARP head studs
rebuild head
port matched d16z6 intake
RC 370cc injectors
custom water/meth injection
greddy 15g at 9.3psi
front mount intercooler, 3" thick, 6"tall and 18? wide
chipped p06 and chrome pro tuned
2" hot side intercooler pipes, 2.5" cold side with cxracing (egay) bov
Even still have AC and PS
AEM wideband
oil pressure and boost gauges
modded ebay catch can
shit greddy down pipe and all stock like 2" exhaust, will change soon...

car pulls hard and I love it, just want more boost now....

Can ya elaborate on the custom meth/water injection?

What was the dyno gains after turbo install?

And also look at the noob of the year thread in this board. (we like maintaining tradition)  :noel:

I have a 6 gal tank in the trunk and a line run to the engine bay to the input on the pump. A 12V 60 psi pump http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_357081_357081 you can see mounted near the passenger fender. then the out put line goes to that nozzle in the charge pipe before the throttle body. I then have an adjustable hobs switch with a vacuum line from the manifold hooked into it set to about 4 psi right now, so i hit 4 psi and the pump turns on and sprays the water meth. I can find some links for the stuff later. I also mounted a red light in the car by my feat that turns on when the meth kicks on.

Stay tuned for dyno results with in a week or two, just been fine tuning and such.

ill take a look

That sucks bro, i had the same thing happen with my b7 build when i was running low on gas. My afr's went nuts as i was turning into the gas station, i heard a pop and that was the same result. Once i get it runnimg again i wont let my car get under a quarter tank lol.

What are you upgrading too?

Ha yea, stock bottom end with 250k with over 9 lbs  I expected it. Was boosting, at maybe 5000ish rpms and the clunk clunk smoke...

Well I had just improved some little things with the water meth set up and was taking it for a test drive. I had plenty of gas and was watching the AFRs really closely and everything looked good. Yea thats a good idea, I let mine get a little low I think...

Well as we speak I am trying to find a buy a d16z6 or d16y8 and then I want to build the bottom end with Vitaras and the custom rods for them and add more boost! I have a potential motor right now...

If you need bigger injectors, check out my 900cc/800cc forsale thread. You will hate yourself if you don't look there first.

Will do sir, I plan to build a d16 so those may be a little big for my goals, I am going to stick with the RC 370s I have for a while then may move up onto the 450-550cc range later

Get the 800's. being a little too big is never bad when it comes to $125 new injectors.

I do have 550cc injectors that have a split-cone spray, and 440cc in the near future. The 550cc's will be more than the 800cc's, but I'm planning the 440cc's to be priced at or below the 800cc's.

SOOOO heres the core motor I found local, has 291k on it ha

Fuck you junk yard.

stripped it down

heres my stage 3 F1 clutch I got for $70 shipped, we will see how it does, I read some good reviews, might be good, might be shit.

and i got all this in the mail from p2p0

vitara spec

got this for $98 shipped, has about 110k on it

cleaned up random parts

was checking out the head and block sanded the surface, came out great! then jet cleaned it and noticed that one exhaust valve....

So tested them for leaks and intakes sealed awesome but exhaust were iffy so I took all valves out and wire brushed them, lapped them all in a few times, put new oil seals on and brushed out the guides. Turned out great

Crank balance was about perfect still from the factory but we took out another .5 gram off one side. I got this CXracing light weight flywheel off there site for $113 shipped. Weighs a little over 8lbs, kinda worried its too light :/. Had to take 10 grams off a spot on it to balance it. Also balanced the pulley and had to take out a little bit

Heres that nasty block you saw before BUT now its been jet washed, bored to 75.5 with a .003 PTW clearance and has been decked. How pretty is that?? My machinist is the man

pistons and rods came pretty much in perfect balance, my machinist was really impressed with the quality of this stuff, THANK YOU P2P0.

on

cleaned and polished

notched everything

checking mains clearances, all checked out :)

ring gap time.... I am going to the shop in 2 hours to finish that up :), more coming soon guys!

Cleaned a lot of random parts

pistons going in!

all in

boost :D and arps in

cxracing flywheel on

f1 stage 3 on

Cleaned up the tranny a ton, its still dirty but its 100x better then it was and installed a new throw out bearing

short block assembled!

intake manifold on and primed the oil system so it ready to go :D

intalling the motor alone with no lift or engine hoist was....interesting...ha to lower the car all the way so it was sitting on the body

filled rear tranny mount with window weld

but I did it!

stayed up working on it till 5:30 am, got everything hooked up, cleaned, rerouted wires, axles back in and suspention yadda yadda
bling bling

Here is how she sits now, also I added a b18 60mm throttle body and ported the inlet of the intake manifold to match

SHE RUNS! ha a odd idle because of the throttle body not being set up right but that's fixed and she idles like a dream!
Had to adjust the rockers again too because it was loud, 1 & 3 intake side were loose. It drives really well, still getting used to the clutch and light weight flywheel but over I like it a lot and it revs much faster and freely now

Had to fight a oil leak, the seal in the distributor and the dist. O ring were bad, my new Beck & H valve cover gasket was CRAP! So i Had to go get a felpro one to fix that leak but everything seems to be good now :). I also put in fresh tranny fluid.

I repainted my intercooler/pipes to be hidden

And since the car was filthy I decided to wash it for the FIRST time EVER since I have owned it haha

Well now I just need to rack up some miles on it to ensure the rings set properly,  I have about 46 of the 500 miles done on Joe Gibs break in oil and then will have another 1000-1500 on VR1 before she gets boosted :( so i better get driving! All is on a stock tune from a p28/stock injectors on my chipped p06 that I will be wiring vtec into soon and soldering in vtec to make it a p28.

Galant hit 25+psi with less than 500miles. CRX was hitting the wastegate spring (9-12?) on it's maiden voyage. motor I just built for buddy was crackin the vTaK on its 1st trip too...

my "break in" is done before it leaves my driveway. might change filter/oil after a couple miles.

watch the wideband, oil/coolant leaks, etc. have some fun.

my breakin is to let the car idle for at least 20min (honda recommends for bearings), but usually its almost an hour. i check for leaks, afr's, bleed coolant, make sure fans cycle and not overhead, torque lugnuts, just make sure she is 100%.
sometimes if i feel i care i have done a compression check to see how we are doing at that point.

I start my fresh motors up, let idle for 5 min. Go drive normal until its up to normal operating temp(about 5 min). At that point I start at 1.5k and floor it up to 3k and leave it in that same gear and let it compression brake back down to 1.5k, and then punch it again until 3.5k and let it come back down to 1.5k I do that in 500 rpm increments up to 6k or so. Drive lightly for a few min make sure no overheating and then do a couple of good pulls up to 6k back to back. Drive home normal, chaing oil and then drive it like I stole it!

Need more info on this:

Is that just a v-block setup or is that wiring mean it senses weight for balancing? I've been thinking about trying my own version of v-blocks for stuff like this.

Cranks sits in a v block on each end, then there is the belt in the middle to spin it. We then put a tracer on the fly wheel or crank that that sensor in the lower part of the picture so it knows where we need add/take weight out.
hope that helps

« Reply #28 on: October 14, 2013, 03:08:10 PM »

Alot has happened,
I boosted the motor ago with the same setup with the  15g at it was fun, something was wrong with the turbo and made it really laggy but it felt pretty good at 10 psi and open down pipe and then ok with 2" exhaust an 8 psi but then I had collected all of this goodness-

So the other week I installed and did-
-tial 38mm wastegate with 6 psi spring
-semi log turbo mani for 38 wg and t3
-garrett 57 trim .6 comp, .63 turbine
-built a 3" down pipe
-built a 1.5" screamer pipe (used old CX exhaust :))
-put a glass pack after the down pipe and used a V band (more exhaust will be put on
-put on a different intercooler, it has a little more internal volume but much more front surface area
-changed up the catch can system a little
-rerouted and clean up vacuum lines
-new intake set up

So far I love the new turbo! it spools later, starting around 4000 and by the time vtec hits at 4800 it gets nasty! I still have a lot more tuning to do, the AFR is looking very good right now and getting really smooth but I have not messed with timing much, just added a little bit in the mid range. So once I start playing with it I believe I can get the spool time down a little bit.
I have it at 10.5 psi right now (I need a bigger map) and it rips! Breaks the tires loose in 1st and 2nd with my LX tranny all day, it'll spin the tires till 70mph haha. But its feeling seriously quick and I can't wait to get a 3 bar map and turn up the boost to about 15-16psi.

Future plans include
-Adding another glass pack and 3" pipe to the rear with another muffler for a very quiet sleeper exhaust (till wastegate opens!)
-3 bar map
-boost up to 16psi
-tuning, lots of it, also will be getting on a dyno so I can tune it
-better air filter and heat shield
-Improved catch can set up

And then after that stuff is sorted out
-integra front brakes
-new brake booster
-rear discs if i find a deal
-ES bushing kit
-new ball joints/tie rods
-raceland coil overs or some other shocks/springs but staying STOCK height
-building some traction bars
-rear sway bar
