Cheapass shed?
« on: July 09, 2013, 10:13:43 PM »

I would like to build a cheap shed for storage of motorbike, grass cutter, and other random shit.  Since I'm renting the place, I don't want to spend a lot of money.

Store-bought or DIY?  Concrete blocks or wood?

store bought is easier to sell on cl when you move.
how long do you need it to stay up and do you want to keep people out or just keep the stuff covered?
some 1x1 with 1/4" plywood would keep it covered and be pretty cheap, but it won't make it through a windy or rainy/snowy winter

Trevor72 got one of those piece of shit tin sheds from the hardware store and then dug a hole and buried a wheel with a chain wrapped around it to lock his shit too. Worked well at that apartment.

I needed more storage space a few months ago, I plan to sell my house in a few years and couldn't justify building another shed. I got a good deal on CL for a 7x14" enclosed trailer. When I move I'll sell the trailer and break even or take a small hit, but it was the best option for me.

Was eyeing what they usually have on sale at lowes seasonally. Can get some nice space to do some work plus store stuff or $499+tax and they drop it off.  Was going that route but unsure if i'm moving or not yet.....

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/7-x-4-5-lifetime-storage-shed/prod3320191.ip?iid=Category|TOPSELLER|Sheds%20and%20Outdoor%20Storage|Lifetime%C2%AE%207%27%20x%204.5%27%20Storage%20Shed

I've helped two of my buddies put together these basic plastic $600-700 Sams Club units.  It will take you a good weekend to assemble and you really need to ask a homeboy to come help out.  Another guy I know just had him and his wife (with the same level of mechanics, being none) and theirs was fucked up upon completion.  Not the best price but not the worst, I'm sure the same thing can be found online for cheaper.

i was thking of building somthing either on railroad ties or just cheap treated 4x4s (or whatever they use for deck posts) then either laying them out level, or making it like a small deck to start with cement and poles sunk in, then just wing it from there and probly make somthign ghetto and good enough. mostly ply wood with maybe cheap siding sheets as the only thing between outside and inside. maybe sheet rubber or curregated shit for a roof

Siding is and roofing is the killer in the cost here.  The floor and studs to frame it up are cheap as shit.

Fucking studs cost $3 a piece here. last time I built some thing in wood a few years ago (5-6) they were $2

Nothing beats DIY. Around here sheds go for a fucking premium (~$1200) and thats for an 8X12... I built a 12X12 workshop with 120/240 and 25 year shingles for around $600. Look around on Craigslist type sites for shingles/wood/other materials.
