B20 auto crv tuning
« on: August 05, 2013, 11:12:10 AM »

So, looks like I'll be picking up an auto 99/00 crv in a couple weeks. I'm wanting to go overboard trying to gain mpg and looking into tuning. If it was a manual I'd just stick a chipped po6 in it and call it a day, but its auto and I don't really have the funds for a manual swap at the moment. From my googling it looks as though a piggy back setup is the only option due to the ecu also being the tcu. Anyone have any input on this?

How are inspections where you live?  If you can get away with converting it to OBD1, you can probably run a trans computer and ECU from an integra (the OBD1 cars had separate boxes).

Then again, your trans control options are really down to if these are the old school mid-90's style honda automatics with no linear solenoid (shift and lockup solenoids and throttle lever only), or the late 90's units with ECU line control.

Or go totally nuts and wire in a chipped ecu to just run fuel and spark, and leave everything else hooked up to the stock computer.

No inspections or emissions of any kind in Florida. I could drop a v8 in with a carb if I wanted.

Updates since that first post

I bought the crv wednesday and also got a free vafc from a friend. I'm leaning towards the vafc at the moment. I did consider going completely obd1 with ecu and tcu but that's a lot of damn wiring plus the ecu controls downshifts and not a kickdown cable. This is intended to be a reliable daily, not a toy. Manual swap is pretty much out of the picture. Its a nightmare in crv's compared to civic/tegs and I'm getting old and tired these days. I did also consider piggy backing an obd1 ecu for fuel and ignition functions and let the obd2 ecu monitor things and control the tranny. Thats still an option.

My plans are very up in the air. I'm thinking cold air intake(which might be converted to hot air intake for mpg reasons), tri Y header, no cats or resonators, but some sort of luxury car muffler to get more flow but remain quiet. I'm pretty set on that. The up in the air part is a possible vtec head, very slight possible low boost small turbo setup and less likely but on my mind more is a Jackson supercharger if I can find one for LS. If money was no object I would supercharge it instantly. They just aren't cheap...... and I am.

Pretty sure one or both cams is off a tooth timing wise. Who knows, after I fix that this thing might be peppy enough to just leave alone. It idles a tad low and is slightly sluggish to start rolling from a dead stop. Otherwise feels normal. I decided to check ignition timing last night and had to crank the distributor quite a bit to get 16*, about the same as one tooth on the cam gear. I have only put about 75 miles on it since owning it, still feeling it all out.

Some guy on pgmfi mentioned 93 integra tcu. Says it can run an obd2 auto tranny. Anyone confirm that tcu uses tps for downshifting and not a kick down cable?

If I remember correct, there is no Kickdown cable attached to the throttle body. And no extra cable that goes to the trans. My bro in law had a 92 auto, and we swapped the motors, and I don't rermember ever seeing a Kickdown cable.

I don't know if the civics had this, but his had that "sport mode" you could shift it down into 3rd and click the button and it would adjust the shit points. Or I think that's what it did. It had 1, 2, s3, s4 and D

So there isn't an issue with swapping in an OBD1 ECU if it is 5 speed?

Jumper harness and chipped obd1 ecu will go right into a 5 speed crv and tune just like anything else. The auto crv's have the tcu built into the ecu, so tuning isn't as easy. I'm getting tempted to try to piggy back an obd1 ecu into it though. Let the obd2 ecu control the tranny and monitor sensors, and let the obd1 ecu control the injectors and spark.

I'm sure there would be a small market for a jumper harness that allows both ECUs to be ran.

I'm tempted to put my Hondata in the CRV now lol....

I don't know, my googling shows nobody playing with auto crv's. and really, not many people playing with the manual ones either.

Apparently the RT4WD system doesn't handle a lot of power reliably.
I've actually seen a few off-road converted CRV's, and a few turbo ones too. People prefer non-tec vs VTEC, mainly because of valve reliefs. Something to keep in mind.

I had vtec thoughts at one point, but I probably won't. I can get more performance from a turbo at the same cost. I don't think valve reliefs are an issue for me. Mine has the b20z2 which(according to heresay and a little research) has vtec sized valves.

Like I said before, my ideal situation would be a JRSC, but at $1300-1500 used it will probably never happen. I'll probably end up making a log manifold and going 14b or small 16g. I want insta spool and don't care about anything above 6k.
