take a look at this bearing...wtf?
« on: August 25, 2014, 11:57:48 AM »

so yeah. these came from a D16Y8. was told it had a rod knock and needed a motor. still haven't talked to him to find out the actual noise it made.

3 rods looked like that. one looked just used. mains looked well used but not too bad.

i dont have a picture of the crank or rods cuz they looked fine. and honestly i cleaned them all up and reinstalled with some different bearings. even plastigauged them. 2 where money, 2 on the loose side but still in spec.

so what's the thoughts on these bearings?!?!

What rod # is that?  :noel:

think that #3 was the only legit one... #1-2-4 all looked the same. don't remember which was the broken one... think it was #2.

Maybe it is the color photo QC that bearing looks rusted, maybe some how the bearing were bad to start with.

Or low oil volume coupled with oil starvation due to not checking his oil enough.

What does your shop's head mechanics think?

that's not rust that's the second layer of the bearing... copper. in the middle it is actually all the way threw the copper, that is a giant crater in there.  :o

I haven't asked around at work. but we don't rebuild engines. we have 1 maybe 2 guys that can rebuild auto trans.

I just typed bad rod bearings into Google images and didn't find any like the ones I posted. I did find one that cracked similar to mine (but not broken)....  :-\

Are you sure the crank is ok, did the oil hole in the crank get clogged up, along with the block and main girdle?

By the look of bearing there is got to be chunks in the oil passages, may need to inspect the oil pump.  :noel:

Maybe it was just a shitty bearing set? Usually they break apart into flakes but the entire surface does so. My guess is it had loose rockers, the bearing material clogged the oil pickup, and the owner thought combination of oil dummy light & noisy head was actually bad bearings.

Maybe send the pictures to some bearing companies, see what they say.

Everyone I have seen like that was a oil burner and I always assumed was run low on oil.
