Finally working on the civic.

Hello, and fuck yourself!

Johnny5 the 95 civic hatchback turd has been sitting in our driveway for over a year now, and was parked and not running in various places for another 6 months before then. The tires have been flat for probably the last 4 months. Supreme white trash factor + it's parked in front of our ghetto looking house = girlfriend not stoked. The warm weather and present joblessness has me feeling motivated to do something. I'm doing this post for accountability to keep me working on this thing.

Here's the plan:
Remove D15
Convert auto to manual
Replace with b20z and gsr transmission
Celebrate temporary success, drink beer, drive fast.

Scavenge remaining parts needed for turbo
Turbo it.
Success.

Spent an hour or two the last two days tinkering and disconnecting shit in the engine bay. My work area sucks- shitty dirt and gravel floor carport. Meh. Photos on the phone, will post shortly...

Casper is nice most of the time starting to get too many people living near me, may have to move out of town.  :noel:

The car scene is very cool, we are trying to get a drag strip and a motorpark built. 

Douglas Motor Park keeps having threats from the City council of closure.

On a separate note, do you bogs think I should try to keep a/c or just say fuck it? It would be nice to have, but if it's going to make the swap plus turbo a headache later it would be easy to pull it all now...
My one turbo civic I had years ago didn't have a/c anyway so I didn't have to worry about it...

The speedway is in city limits, it was an old runway, top fuel raced there up 'til mid 90's

If you stay in Wyoming A/C is not needed, tint you windows, drive 2/60 (2 windows down @ 60mph) is all the a/c you need.

A tiny bit of progress- disconnected more shit yesterday, pulled all the autotragic shifting crap. I think the only things left keeping the engine in are separating the ball joints and unbolting the engine mounts. Need to pick up a pickle fork today, and might rent the engine hoist too and rip this thing out this afternoon.

Success is a mess on your driver side floor


Getting parts ready... I have two different starters and 6 different engine mounts, hoping I have the right number of the right ones, no idea what they came off of at this point


Some day soon.... Need to replace the inlet turbine, this one chewed apparently chewed on a rock

For the bottom-out engine approach, I'd still need to rent or borrow the high lift jacks (though I should probably own one for my 4runner anyway...) We'll see. I wish I could trust the rafters in my carport because I'd just winch it out from the ceiling that way. The carport is shitty as hell, really hoping to tear it down and build a proper garage this summer.

I tried loading the ball joint bolt with a jack and beating on the lca with no luck, and I did already twist off the bolt for the passenger side ball joint. The car has just sat too long and let the bolts rust a bit too much I think. I broke 5 of the 6 10 mm bolts that hold the automatic shifter crap down under the car along with a handful of others too, despite liberal use of PB blaster. Meh? It's part of what has been slowing me down. That, and it's hard to get much of a rhythm only working on it for a couple hours at a time.

BTW I will be doing one of my sc14 s/c installs in an hatchback in the next couple weeks.

Ha! Russ maybe I'll coax you up here with pizza and beer when I'm ready to put the b20 in. Do you have any tuning and chip burning stuff? I have a chipped ecu, but at this point I have no idea what tune is on it...

Progress. Feels like I'm getting somewhere now! 4-8 inches of snow forecast today, so it'll sit pretty for a couple days

The new heart, b20z2


She's got a 12lb? flywheel, a 6 puck clutch and beefier pressure plate I think from LSD motorsports a chris m ported intake manifold matched to a 70mm throttle body, dc 4-2-1 headers, and it'll be paired with a gsr transmission. It has adjustable cam gears on it, and I have a set of crower 402t's, but I need valvesprings before I put those in. I think it should scoot along pretty well as is until it gets boosted. I've never heard it run, so it's entirely possible the engine is torched. Turns over okay by hand though  :Jew:

TO DO:
Swap harness and some sensors over to b20
Install new pedals and clutch master cylinder (and rig up a reservoir)
Figure out what I need to do with auto-manual swap wiring, patch extra center console hole
Pull off old exhaust, replace with new (used) exhaust & replace muffler
Put b20 and gsr tranny together, install in car
Do all the other little shit I'm not thinking of
Profit.

Didn't get anything done this weekend because we went to Moab to sleep in the dirt and run on dry singletrack. Quite nice. Yesterday I pulled the harness off the d15 and started putting it on the b20, and I worked on filling my engine mounts.

I tried to get fancy and maybe save some money by ordering this stuff rather than using window weld, but I ended up needing less than I thought, and with the cost of shipping I probably spent more money. Only downfall is that I didn't notice that this urethane comes out white without adding a dye. No care.  :mexi:





It's 60A and windowweld is 80A, so it should be a little softer. It poured in really well, the consistency of Mrs. Butterworth's, and it starts to firm up after about 4 or 5 minutes, fully cured in 48 hours. I'll let you know if it fails miserably... If it works I'll probably use it on my girlfriend's subaru's engine mounts, which are falling apart.

Ha! You be dreamin'. The urethane came from smooth-on.com I have no other experience with them, but they shipped the product on a normal/reasonable timeline and had a pretty large selection of different rubbers and urethanes, so I suppose I'd vouch! You can buy in much larger quantities- I ordered the sample size- but it also says that the shelf life isn't very long after opening unless you de-gas it.

guy sells 2 part stuff like that on eBay. 60-80-98a... you can also get it from McMaster Carr I think also.


PS. 3m lists window weld at about 60a on their msds sheet thing on there site.

Progress: back from the dead.



Shits coming together. She fired right up after sitting for 2 years. Running a little rough, and JD helped me diagnose a solid CEL and is sending me a fresh ecu. I drove it a couple miles down the road- the rusty brakes were a little scary, and I think it was in limp mode, but it felt damn good to have it driving again!

BACK FROM THE DEAD!

Just like this thread, I'm reviving the car again.

The Novel:
I had it running fine for about a year, really only driving it occasionally. We moved to Flagstaff, AZ last November. I ended up helping my father-in-law with a couple project back in Wyoming last June and drove the civic up there from AZ. Shortly before I'd left, I'd picked up some integra front and rear knuckles/brakes from a guy in Phoenix and swapped the fronts on because my civic caliper was seizing. Something was funky because the camber was noticeably negative even after adjusting the skank2 upper control arms out all the way. By the time I was headed back from WY to AZ, I noticed the tires were wearing FAST and really weird, suspected bad wheel bearings. Around 150 miles from home got a flat because it had worn through the cord. Threw the spare on and got it to a shop, got a new tire. Got to 100 miles from home, re-torqued everything in the front arms to make sure it wasn't my work. Made it to 40 miles from home and the wheel bearing wobble was bad enough that it snapped off the end of the axle. Wife picked me up that night, drove me back out the next morning with a new axle. Installed new axle in shoulder of highway, babied home. And then it sat parked until last weekend. Motivation is a fickle thing.

Last weekend:
Reinstalled civic front spindles and installed some used ground control coilovers with new ebay chinese struts (lord help me)
Drove the civic to the gas station... sweet victory. I also put new snow tires on it.

Just picked up a new caliper and rotor yesterday, will install this week
Ordered new rear LCAs and some other parts (broke off the shock mount bolt in the current LCA, don't feel like dealing with...)

To Do:
  • Install new (manual) steering rack to replace failing power steering rack
    Replace all bushings in integra trailing arms
    Install integra trailing arms
    Install rear GC coilovers
    Install new master cylinder and prop valve
    Get an alignment
    Be amazed by new stopping abilities

Some day: TURBO
I have a majority of the parts I need, just need to get to work. Still need: injectors, blow off valve, boost basemap chip, and some beefier valvesprings (to install my crower 402t cams)
