Heres my 77 Datsun blowthrough turbo
« on: April 14, 2017, 06:33:37 PM »

Heres my contribution in trying to get some traffic back to this place. I probably would have never given a shit about a turbo if not for HMT and later RHMT. The engine is a stock L20b 2 liter that I upgraded with ARP studs. The turbo is a garrett gt2554r (for now) Yamaha R1 carbs and custom made by me airbox and whatnot. Greddy blow off valve and a shitload of jets.

Here it is when I first got it.

Put a weber carb on it and got bored quick

Yanked that bullshit out and redid the engine bay

Got my brother to shoot an ok paintjob on it.

Working on refinishing these wheels

Then I cobbled together some turbo stuff and put it on the truck

Manifold I made myself. Pressure tested to 32lbs and it held

Got it to start

After some carb jetting, pressurizing the carbs, beer and swearing I finally made a pull on 10lbs as I knew this would turn me out. Not much timing in it here as I still dont know wtf im doing. A dyno trip is scheduled.

Next is to work on part throttle and turn the boost up until it says uncle. I have a spare block that Ill be completely building and ill be stepping up to a bigger turbo. Its fun as shit as boost is instant. On my integra I have to wait a second or 2 before im going.

I made a detonation detector using one of those hearing aid boxes, some extra wire and an alligator clip using this writeup: http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&title=DIY-Detonation-Detection-Part-2&A=0353 Hopefully friday or saturday I can get out and do some pulls and come up on the timing a bit. I still intend to get to the dyno but I figure I can use this to make sure part throttle and coming up on and into boost is safe as is. AFRs are around 11.5-11.8.

Also started polishing on the wheel faces.

Finished polishing these up and got some tires mounted. They are shitloads lighter than the ones I took off.

I also tested out the det detector and it works pretty damn well. You can clearly tell when the timing is where the engine is gonna take a shit. I backed off 2 degrees from that and no detonation.

Still not fucking rowdy enough! Needs more timing and/or turbo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QiKaZXD368

I think im applying too much honda knowledge to this old datsun engine. N/A, these are all in at 35 degrees @ 3000rpm. Im pulling it back to 27 degrees at 8-10lbs on this little turbo. Im thinking itll be happer in the 29 possibly 30 range at these small boost levels and small turbo. Then I can pull more timing once im beyond 10lbs. Either way im not mad because it was an absolute turd without it.

4th gear. Almost as quick as I'd want to go in a 620. Another 2-5lbs should do it. Currently at 10lbs with more timing added. I heard this turbo becomes a heat pump after 15lbs so I'll stop there.
