Hobart's quality?
« on: May 11, 2009, 12:16:47 PM »

I got a little money on the side to buy a new mig welder, I have it down to the Hobart Handler210 or Lincoln 180c. The handler is a little bigger, but they are both priced right around the same. The only thing that is stopping me from going out and buying the Hobart tommorow is that the drive rolls aren't metal, Has anyone had any trouble with them? I know Lincoln is known for its quality, but I have'nt heard much on the behalf of Hobart. I appreciate the views and opinions of all you experienced guys out there.

My dad has welded professionally in the past and now does it when needed to fix the heavy equipment he runs, He swears by lincoln. I have heard anything from Miller, Lincoln, and Hobart are quality though. And If I wanted to compare oranges to oranges I would put the handler 187 to the lincoln 180c, theres a 200$ price difference between the two, if I saved that 200$ I could afford Hobarts plasma cutter also. I just have to make alot of decisions and Im new to all of this so... ::)

I dont think the Handler 187 or 210 do that, I was reading on the website and it seems like that is an option for the smaller two handlers.

wire feed speed = amperage
which is why increasing one increases the other lol!

friend's dad has a super old 110v 100amp hobart. been serviced twice in 5 years, still has problems think id go with the L for a mig.

i got a handler 187 for like $550 brand new and i love it.  ive done everything from manifold and exhaust shit to motorcycle and bicycle frames.  im not even that good at welding and it makes me look good (sometimes)  it has a miller gun, and might use other miller parts? and my local farm fuckin huge store and tool places stocks mostly hobart parts and accessories.

that thing + my harbor frieght auto dark mask and i feel like i can do anything  :noel:

the 187 seems to have no problem heating through anything ive used it for. or burning holes if im being dumb.  i had pretty much no welding experience when i got mine and fired it up and went at it, made a whole turbo kit for my bmw.  blew the car up within a few days but the welding expierence was priceless

I have a handler 140.  I haven't noticed the change in wire speed when I change the heat.  I'm actually quite happy with it...

I have the harbor freight junk, and a handler.  I prefer using the HF more, because it's easier to use, while not costing me shit to replace, since HF has a warranty on all hand tools, they usually replace the welders free of charge if your not a dick about it.  If I could find someone locally to buy it, I'd off the Hobart in a heartbeat.  Paid way to much at my local TSC to let it go cheap though.

I had the cheap HF 80 dollar welder.  It's since gone up in price, but I used it for 4 years before the wire feed motor burnt up.  I replaced it with a cheap radioshack motor epoxied into place.  It had 2 wire speeds, fast and ungodly fast.  It worked til I could collect enough pennies to buy another one.  As far as I'm concerned, at that price I can handle them being replaced every few years.
