i hate computers... help?

any computer geeks in the house?

trying to restore my other computer (laptop, Dell Inspiron 600m). getting a "The system can not find the file specified" while trying to copy c:\windows\repair\system

help? thanks....

I assume this is during a windows install/repair?
Does it hang on the same files every time?
If you select retry a bunch of times will it eventually go to the next file?

it does it on all the repair files. i deleted and copied the others just fine. but im hung up on those repairs...

What exact step is it hanging on?   Reply w/ the exact command you typed.

Nevermind, I think I see the line that isnt working.  If its failing to copy those, I would download a Linux live cd to boot from and then try copying from there.  Google Hirens boot CD.

copy the home directory and save it off the system or a removable drive.

reload the operating system.

reload home directory.

"the System connot ginf the file specified"

then goes to the C:\WINDOWS>

I wouldn't mix and match home and pro, do you have another computer that has xp on it with the same version you are running?

negative. my PC has Vista, and all the work comupters have XP Pro. i know my boss has XP Home cuz i got the disc from him, but he is on vaca for like 2 weeks.

Just format and start over... If you need files off it, either

1) Pull the hd put in an external enclosure and put in a working computer
2) Download linux live burn to cd, and use a usb stick to copy all your shit.

Much easier than fucking with that restore bs.

1) what? already tried a adapter thing to USB that didnt wanna work, buddy tried one too
2) not sure what that does? you wanna DL another OS on the computer? still get my files off it?


i want my shit off my HDD, dont care about getting it back to the way it was or shit like that. ill start over, already did, bought the PC im working on now. i wanna get my shit off it, then i will wipe the fucker clean, upgrade some shit (memory, maybe HDD) and use it for my tuning laptop...
