New Project: WVO GMC

Since gas prices have already gone up 40 cents in the past two weeks where I live, I've had my eye out for a diesel truck that I could convert or make switchable to waste vegetable oil.  All I wanted was a truck that I could tow my civic to events with and could fit 4 adults comfortably for road trips to away football games and other events, all for 3-5 grand.  Well you can't find shit thats 'king' cab or whatever thats older than say a 98 (and hence in my price range).  Also, you can't find a 12 valve that has a good transmission for under 5 grand, so when this beauty popped up, I decided to settle for it.  Room for 8, and can tow three civics if it wanted to


Yea, yea I know 6.5L ain't shit but I'm not building a tractor puller.  They are very common, lots of parts, lots of research on what to do an what needs to be done to improve the engine, and it's kind of like a D-series.  If I screw up the motor, just go to the yard and grab another one.  In general, it's a great vehicle for me to toy with, plus it's boosted


Lots of stuff planned for this bad boy, including a second tank, two 3-way valves, and an extra lift pump for the WVO.  Also going to be adding several gauges, such as boost, WVO temp, and EGT.  It's a GM-5 turbo and I can't find shit for specs on the net for it



It's going to be a fun project, and hopefully will pay for itself in no time, especially when everyone's paying $4 a gallon again.  In the mean time, I'm going to be running on a mix of diesel and used motor oil/used tranny oil/whatever I can get my hands on free that's petrol based.  Or I can hit my buddy up that has a small scale biodiesel processor, 40 gallon batches at a time.

Reader's Digest:
Bought a 1996 GMC 2500 Suburban with 6.5L trubo diesel, auto tranny, and four wheel drive.  I'm converting it to WVO to save a shit ton of money when petrol gets to $4 dollars a gallon again this summer.

Make sure your fuel oil is clean and you can visibly see through it, Co-worker of mine has a 1500 with the 6.5 diesel, tried waste motor oil (used to run well in his 05 cummins) in his and it threw the optical sensor in the fuel distributor for a loop.  Back to diesel and all was good after cleaning all the oil from the tank.

Thanks, but I was already aware of the problem.  I plan on making small scale mixes before hand in bottles that I can see through, and then mix the fuel tank accordingly.  I just wish it was a '94-'95, not a '96 like it is.  OBD2 FTL  :-\

you don't think you can see through a blend of diesel and used motor oil?  depends on the potency, I'll do some testing tomorrow.

me personally, no, but my buddy has.  I've been to his shop and he showed me the whole setup, titration to washing and drying.  its pretty cool and all, but why bother with all those chemicals and waste when you can just collect 55 gallons of wvo, let it settle for a couple days, run the top 45 gallons through a filter and thow it in your tank.  i'm way more of a keep it simple kind of guy

because you cant start it on strait wvo
cant run it in cool or winter temps without a heater
have to start and shutdown on diesel if you fuck up and forget your are going to be down for quite a while pushing lard out of your injector pump/lines
its getting harder to find free oil
it doesnt lubricate the way diesel does
its not a solvent like diesel
it produces more NOx
you vehicle smells like a mexican restaurant
its not road legal
ect, ect

meth is kinda pricy but you dont use much, lye is cheap as fuck, you can sell your glycerol or dump it down the drain (its soap)

bio is bullshit, higher price than regular diesel and decreased performce.
running oil/fuel mix is fine, dont go over 50 50, run a fuel heater, and filter it.
the 6.2 and 6.5 are both garbage.
veggy oil setups can be great. pm me if you want more info on them.

i will agree in some cases veggy oil setups are not practical. however in a warm climate with someone driving a smaller vehicle and does have access to large amount of waste veg oil, how could free fuel be a bad thing. and as LS1pwNzJ00 was complaining about poor mpg with wvo, why would mpg even matter if you had an abundance and it was free?  not saying im a tree hugger because i work on some of the most polluted machines on the road today just sayhing wvo in some cases does prove effective. i still vote 50 50 oil diesel imo
