What would cause a tire to roar?
« on: May 26, 2009, 04:26:33 PM »

I had a bad roaring coming from my left rear tire that I had suspected maybe a bad wheel bearing as my tires have hardly any wear on them. (Maybe 10k) I rotated my tires just to check, and sure enough it's now roaring like hell from the driver side front and it shakes the steering wheel.

What would cause a newer tire to do this? Out of balance?

Na I checked over the tires good when I rotated them. No knots, bad uneven wear, or anything. My first guess is balance, but the people at the tire store said it's probably just uneven wear and it will fix itself now rotated.

It's more of a roar with a thump. Going to just take the tire in somewhere and see if they will check the balance.

Tread pattern and uneven wear determine tire noise.

If its already roaring, chances are it aint gonna stop. Might try a couple of burnouts, if the car can do it. Doubt if that tire will ever quiet down though.

Low speed vibration/thump that you can feel in the wheel is a broken/slipped belt.

Certain tires can roar like that.

My friend has some used khumo all seasons with like 400a treadwear and they are loud as fuck.  Can't hear his 3" straight pipe over the tires and have to yell to talk to one another.

Camber up front is like 1.5* and the toe is about as close to zero as you can get by eyeball/straight edge/protractor means......

We've got hella camber in the rear (dropped too low and didn't bother adjusting camber b/c he wanted to drive it asap) and no noise back there.  The rears are 280a khumo excsta supra v treads or something.  Same i have on the rear of my car.  I told him to swap the tires and see if that helped.  We can talk at normal volume in the car but the noise is still there, just comming from the back.

Tires can make all the difference.  Some are really fucking noisy.

^ Not when it's just one tire that all 4 are the same. I have ran Kumho ecstas for years on several cars with no noise, so don't know what your issue is.

Tire treadwear ratings only apply to the manufacturer.  So a kumho 400 is not the same as a pirelli 400.  It was a federally mandated stature that didnt apply a standard for the industry, so the OEMs basically just did what they wanted.  Another example of the Gov wasting our money.

Also, a feathered tire is far more likely to cause noise than one that has seen too much negative camber.  Too much toe in or out is usually the culprit.  Also, the wider the tire, the more noise you are going to have regardless. Keep that in mind.

Uneven wear such as channeling or cupping or the tire has tread separation.
