Buying a car sucks ass, need help
« on: June 08, 2009, 02:55:29 PM »

I have worked in the auto Industry for the better part of 15 years and even though I sold cars for 5 years and now work at GMAC , I cringe when I have to buy a car that is merely transportation.

Replacing a 2000 VW TDI , I know nothing will get the mileage it gets, but it has been eating away at my wallet and it's almost due for a timing belt. 285K on this bad boy. I actually parked it on the weekend after seeing that the belt has small cracks in it. Rockin a Caprice LT1 wagon now. Nothin says loving like 18 MPG.

Considering:

Acura TL - 2002- 2003  Regular or Type S
TSX -manual Tranny
RSX Type S
00-ish SIR
EP3

Not sure what else to look at. Yes I am partial to Honda. I had a 97 M3 and it ate my wallet, had a 02 Mini it ate trannies and a 02 Civic DX that was just boring as hell with it's non Vtec Shit Pile (I got pulledon by a corolla S)

no more VW's.

My daily needs to be nothing more then a utencil.

if i were you id take the cash and snatch a '90'something civic and give it the JD treatment.  rock 50 mpg and like 130 whp or whatever it was.  Be able to fix your shit with a paperclip and roll of duct tape and save like gazillions and stuff.  If its nothing more than a utensil why go that new.

Ha! take the same money and buy two.  one to drive one to wreck havok in.

A friend had 3rd gear grind and never even rip the car :?:

Find a first gen crx hf if you want super crazy gas miles; but then again finding 1 is hard to began with, and finding a stock one thats not beat to all hell......well good luck with that!

I would say get an RSX, if you plan on boosting it later, you will love yourself for getting an RSX.

I'm in the same boat as you.  Instead of buying a car, I'm buying another motorcycle.

I think all cop cars need to have turbo. nbspnbsp Then they would understand the necessity of putting your foot down and how uncontrollable the urge is to fucking rail on that shit.

yup ours was 2nd gear on a car with 8k miles.
heard it the first time i shifted over 6500 rpms in the car. wish i did that on the test drive. now when i go on test drives i drive the fuck out of the car.

Which is exactly why I put in some decent synchromesh at the first oil change.  It's a band-aid fix, but I have only had 1 or 2 grinds in the last 15k miles.

I would look for:

Fun to drive (#1 priority... doesn't have to be super fast, just fun)
Decent MPG
Reliable... or at the very least, cheap to maintain.  So if your unreliable car breaks you can fix it cheap  ;)

I hated my RSX-S.  Biggest pile of shit ever.

Sold it before 32K miles.

Cylinder head
2 ecus
ps rack
2nd trans starting to grind
a/c leaking
plastic shit inside falling apart.
etc.

FAKLAD is my final answer.

Mechanical overev/dropped retainers. Typical Kseries failures.

Well the ones attached to those cars are exceptionally bad and most never make it past 60k some go as early as 15k

After '98 Honda transmissions went from merely crap to more fun than a fucking colostomy.  They are the only thing shittier than a WRX transmission.

BTW, EP3s are junk.  Heavy, body roll, the shifter/cable stretch causes grinding problems, front shocks blow every 8-10K miles, go change an alternator for fun.

As far as my 50mpg toy, the drivetrain is for sale.  I'm limping a stock Y8 for as long as it takes to build a Vitara motor and then I'm driving my rotted out ED chassis to a half million miles on a 250 whp RHMT setup.

I'm not sure about the US, but canada has a recall on the tranny's of the TL's.

Drove an 03 TL-S last night with 60K on the clock. Black on Black, had all the service records from Honda and was always dealer serviced. It had a major service 8K ago, new pilot sport's all around, new brakes..ect.

Found a buddy who wants my POS VW.

and Bought a D series Z6 for $30.

good times.

Yeah, they recalled the retainers in the K-series.  They still drop valves.  So?

Fuck JD your an old crotchity hater...

I drive a shit load of miles and want a car with some style... I have too many shit box project cars, I hate the germans and even though I could get a new cobalt SS turbo  $7500 off list with my GM disc I would rather shove a pine cone in my ass then drive one.

I hate buying a car... finding something not gay for 10-12 grand is impossible.

I'm in for one of the newer Mazda piston offerings, manual transmission only.  They are nasty cheap and about as reliable as a Honda used to be.

I drove a few RX8's , price is right, but holy fuckin horrible mileage. The LT1 wagon i am rocking now gets the same mileage as a fuckin rotary oil eater.

friend of mine just blew up his Mazdaspeed 3 with less then 8000 miles on the clock. Hole right int he side of the block
