AC question
« on: June 13, 2009, 07:08:48 PM »

So I'm trying to charge the AC on mom's 1996 Honda Accord, and it won't take any refrigerant.  It's been idling with the compressor jumped for almost two hours, has maybe taken 1/5th of a 12 oz can.  Low side is 70-80 psi with valve open and 8-12 psi closed (system actual), and high side is 100-140 psi.  Blows hot air, no surprise it's got no refrigerant.

Anybody have a fucking clue?

You have access to a vacuum pump?

I've never had good luck trying to just add some. Throw a vacuum on it, then let it draw the freon in.

Should be gold.

Sounds like your connector is just barely depressing the shrader valve, try pushing on it, sometimes it will work

Ntrain, it's some wierd unit that uses shop air to create a venturi effect.  I ran it for 15 minutes, would read 20 inches but as soon as I closed the lowside valve on the gauges it'd drop to 10 inches and sit there.

Concepts: you're still black.

Does it hold a steady 10" of Hg when close the high and low valves on the manifold?  I have on of those venturi vacuum pumps and that little fucker will pull a well sealed system down to 25" to 30" of Hg, and closing the valves on the gauge manifold usually nets about the same.

I am assuming it is a TXV system like most Honda vehicles and not CCOT.

With that high of a low side pressure and the low of a high side pressure, either the TXV is stuck open or the compressor is weak.

Just my semi educated guess from what I remember.

I ASSUME that the condenser fan in operating properly even though I doubt the pressures would be what they even if it wasn't.

EDIT:  dammit.  Reading owns me.

Are you running the RPMs up when filling?  Without a pump or a good vacuum to begin with, filing with cans is a bitch sometimes.

The low side pressure with the fill valve open is about right.

Low side is 70-80 psi with valve open and 8-12 psi closed (system actual)

This means something is wrong with your low side hose, shrader valve, or connector.  low side pressure on a full system should be in the 40-50PSI range at idle.

i had the guys at work help me with my AC yesterday...

they put a vacuum on it, for a long ass time... wanted it to HOLD 30inchs. mine kept pulling 30, then going back down to like 15-20 (and holding). so we shot some 134 into it with some leak dye, no leaks, but the pressures where too high. said it was most likely cuz there was moisture or shit in the system. so they made me replace the receiver dryer. then it vacuumed out for 30-45mins, held 30in, and charged up just fine, blows cold... just need another fan so it doesnt overhead at a stop....

his pressures were consistent with a undercharged system.  The drier will not make a system not hold a vacuum.

Concepts is the only person here who knows shit about AC.

Not really. I see your trying some halfass setup trying to charge a system without evac. to get the moisture out and such. Just because I don't chime in, doesn't mean I don't know shit.

Sorta like and all the bullshit tuning questions.....well my bald son, you're on the other side of the cue ball :)

First, it's not a halfassed setup.

Second, you can't get moisture out by drawing a vacuum on the system.  You might get some moist air out, but if the filter-drier is saturated good luck boiling it all out or something.  I just bake them at 200 degrees for an hour, dry.

Third, Concepts was the only person here who knew shit.

TXVs work on temp, JDs pressures were due to an undercharged system.  Moisture would not present a problem untill the system is functional and charged

No, my problem was due to a schrader valve not fully depressed.

Maybe you don't know as much as I thought?

I know how Honda designs their a/c, JD said something about moisture in the drier.

Filter elements in Chrysler bullshit expansion valve set ups are homo as homo can be.

The gaysex.

Well, some TXVs use a pressure reference as well as temp.  Or completely pressure

I told you your problem right off, but either you testing people or did not believe me
Either way I don't mind lending a hand
