anyone ever have vtec just stop working before?
« on: July 09, 2009, 09:33:31 PM »

yesterday car had vtec engaging properly, today i take it down the street and nothing.

i checked the wire going to the solinoid with a multimeter and when the car hit 5500 rpms the wire is showing 14ish volts.  so the ecu is recognizing and sending power to the solinoid.  i have a jdm solinoid with no pressure sensor so the pinout on the harness is chassis grounded.  i pulled the vtec solinoid off and the screen is clear...

anyone ever have a v tec solinoid go bad?   when i jump power from the battery to the solinoid i can hear it clicking...    im pretty stumped.   is there a certain point oil pressure wise where vtec wont engage?

my sunpro gauge was wacky on the dyno and then it just stays  below zero.  the guage works but the sending unit took a shit so i tried installing my new autometer one tonight and my fuckin tunertoys block fitting snapped off in the block...  so i wont have an easy out and a new fitting till tomorrow...    im starting to get a bit frustrated

at least it hasn't cought fire yet

check oil pressure, that would seem like the number one cause.  sounds simple but was possibly the car cold and you didn't have the temp check disabled?

no it was up to temp.   ill check the oil presure tomorrow.   i hope to fucking god thats not the problem.

the pressure sensor is disabled though so vtec sould engage no matter what.   whas the lowest pressure the shit will engage on?   doesnt seem right though..  the motor runs awesome.

if i hear the solinoid clicking i assume its opening though....

once i get this squared away ill toss my new 1200s in it and wax the dyno...

made 320 in 14.6 psi letting off at 6k.   setup should make good power once i get the kinks worked out.

I've had an ecu go bad on me before. The ecu was fine, no codes or anything. It just didn't engage vtec for some odd reason. It was a converted p75. I swapped in a new ecu and it worked just fine. Try a new ecu?

From my understanding VTAC won't work without a properly functioning oil pressure switch. Fix that shit then go from there.

Obd2 jdm motors dont come with pressure switches

You can disable it very easily. I have the pinouts somewhere written down.

replace the solenoid & check wiring.. can't think of anything else aside from the tune/ecu, but you said you checked that already. Did you swap a good ECU/chip or just different ecu with the same chip?

Yeah, but you had the same problem a week or two ago.  It's been an ongoing concern for some time now.

And, to answer the only question worth a shit that you've asked, 50-55 psi.  But as shit slops out over 20 years and 200K miles you can bet your biscuit that some heads want more.

is it throwing a code?
also, just because your gauge says your up to temp doesnt mean the ecu sees good engine temp(seperate sensor) try checking power on the engine temp sensor(2 wire not the 1 plug on thingy) also see if there is a good ground.

no not bearing material.   looks like a tiny bit of alum shavings, prob from when i tapped and plugged the oil passage foe the lsvtec.  i sprayed it but some might have been stuck in there.
