Weird transmission issue...any ideas?
« on: July 26, 2009, 01:21:46 AM »

The CRX suddenly was a bitch to shift.

RPMs had to be perfect or it would not go into gear.  Often, when it did go into gear it would grind.

Before this it never would grind.

A day later, tonight, I'm going to leave a parking lot.  Put it in reverse, start letting off the clutch, BAM!!!   Loud fucking noise, jolted the whole fucking car, popped out of gear...  After I breathe for a few seconds and yell some obscenities, I put it into reverse and back out.

Driving down the road I notice it shifts smooth again.

Being that this happened as I was letting off the clutch, I have a feeling something in the clutch assembly was/is fucked up.

Any ideas?

I'm worried about that POP happening again when I'm driving down the interstate at 80mph.  I'm positive it'd cause some serious damage to something.

Most likely didnt have the gear fully engaged. Reverse on hondas are a bitch known fact

Worn out/non adjusted clutch cables are usually the problem with not being able to engage gears especially when its all of them.

All I know is this is a major problem and whenever we would get cars in that had a hard time shifting a new clutch cable from Honda or adjusting the current cable fixes the problem.

Stock motor yes...265k on the A6.

No special clutch or anything.  I just need it to last until the shop finishes the block, and who knows how long that will take.

I'll look into adjusting the cable.

Hell yeah it's the clutch cable.  Tried to get it into gear today and it wouldn't.  Turned the car off, put it in gear, and tried to start it, the car was moving.

Fuck me.

Remember when my EF hatch did that that time a joe Davis? Same thing happened it popped and jerked when we I was in reverse. Adjusted the cable later and it drove fine.

Yeah, I tightened the cable as much as possible and it still won't do anything.

your cable is most likely stretched out and it should be replaced anyway regardless

Only buy a OEM honda cable when I mean that i really mean that. DO not buy cheapo parts store cables they are totally junk and cause major problems

Before I spend the money on the cable...how do I know for sure it's the cable and not something else?

I dont know Im not looking at the car

This is what i would do.

Cables should be replaced if they havent has they will stretch. if your all the way down to the last thread on the cable and still dont get more play in the clutch your cable is stretched out

In reality it can be a blown clutch, throwout bearing, cable, pedal assembly

The list goes on

The cable is cheap and takes 30 minutes.

Yeah I don't understand why everyone recommends them. When I took my Y8 head to be fixed that time they kept making up dumb ass excuses, then started telling me it was almost done just another day or so, then come to find out after a few weeks they say ah we can't do anything with it it's been ringed. WTF, dip shit I told you that when I brought the damn thing in. I gave them a negative review on HunstvilleCarScene and people flipped out. They might do good work for everyone else, but in my experience they are a bunch of lazy lying fucks.

I bet they keep telling you it will be done on x date, then on that day have some other excuse? Whenever I build a motor again I will be getting just the machine work down (at somewhere else at that) and build it myself.

Yeah, everytime I call, "just a couple more days."  I honestly didn't expect anything more though.

Doesn't matter, I'm broke until the next paycheck, so they can take their time.

You could try to narrow it down by popping the hood and tying the lever on the tranny to something else, then putting a stick in the rope and twisting it a ton to tension it and pull the lever.  (if that makes sense)

Then get in with the car in gear crank it and see if the car still moves.  If it doesn't start it and see if you can shift in and out of gears freely.

Just think of ways to bypass the part you think is bad.
