Why do turbo leak and smoke?
« on: August 19, 2009, 07:34:19 PM »

Anyone has real info WHY a turbo leaks or smoke?

Dont say BAD SEALS.

The seal looks like a piston ring to me, so idk

BAD SEALS or too much oil pressure which may or may not damage the seal.

Because your turbo cant stand how ignorant you are, and is killing itself to get way from you and go to turbo heaven.

No seriously though...

What kind of turbo is it?

Or a shitty drain line like a kinked one and it pressurized the turbo and blowes oil past the seals.

Turbo "seals" are usually just metal or ceramic snap rings that are a snug fit in their respective channels. Excessive oil pressure, carbon buildup, wear from spinning in their bores, etc. are what make your turbo smoke.

Too much oil pressure or a shitty (not excellent) drain can make a new turbo leak oil. I run a .070 restrictor on my garrett, but I've talked to two engineers that work for garrett and they both told me the same thing. They are not aware that any turbo they sell needs a restrictor added to it. A good drain is a must though.

to understand this better, find a forester xt/legacy or outback gt/wrx, and stand behind them for 10mins.   all of the above will show

Do you still have your wrx?  If so, whats its status?

yup still got the slut.  just got it back from the bodyshop after sucking a telephone pole missing a deer.  it fully does wheelies and barrel-rolls.

I don't believe it. Last time you only said barrel-rolls.

If you look at the 3 general type of seals used in modern turbos, they are intended to seal around the shaft, not 90* in the direction excessive oil pressure would push it. Bad oil drains is similar to what an unvented crank case does to rings. Since there is no relief from the pressure, the oil goes the only place it can - into the compressor and turbine.

I've not ran as many turbos as some people, but I've never blown a seal. This includes my 2 old turbos, one is 20+ years old, one was dis/reassembled w/o rebalancing. It amazes me how all these Honda retards blow turbos, yet only a fraction of other car groups can do the same on their turbos. It seems like many Honda guys think their shit don't stink, and don't use a proper restrictor or oil drain.

Only turbo's ive killed were because of compressor surge spooling at 1200rpms on small shaft MHI turbos pieced together from 3 separate units.

HiProfile is right, most people fail at the feed and return. Turbos are fucking tough, it really does take alot to kill one.

i agree with people failing with feed and drains. i see way to many dumb shits runing kinked oil drains and huge oil feeds.

I run a .065" restrictor -4 Line
And -10 Return line, straight shot.\

Turbo still smokes with  new seals.

I think it may of been blowby/back pressure...

i rebuilt my engine, do you think new turbo or rock this one?
