My work bought me a new $500 3D Mouse
« on: August 27, 2009, 05:24:47 PM »

Since my old Spaceball didn't work with the newest version of Inventor, my buddy in purchasing managed to get me a top of the line SpacePilot Pro.

Old piece of shit:

New Hotness:

Definitely awesome 32 button control with an LCD screen that runs open software architecture.  So you can run apps like a Iphone and make your own programs and displays.  Here's the screen:

That is all.  Discuss

Its used for solid modeling for programs like solidworks, CATIA, Inventor, Pro-E, ect.  Its a way to rotate the models on the screen and change views.  If you get into serious design work or do alot of CAD and CAM work, one of these things is a must have.

Also, if you ever used google earth, you can fly through the maps, zoom in and out and rotate without ever clicking a button.  You just need to twist your left hand.

True that.  Doing 3D work with a normal mouse is pretty much the most frustrating shit ever.

I upgraded to a trackball style mouse years ago and that helped over a regular mouse.

I do modeling all day long and I use a $5 2 button scroll mouse.

Sure there's nothing wrong with that, but this is just another tool to make you more productive.  You could work on cars all day long without an air compressor but that doesn't mean you wouldn't do stuff faster with air tools

Mostly industrial machines.  I design specialized equiptment for testing and manufacting of seals.   The last machine I did hydroformed a carbon sleeve into a titanium jet engine gear.  Its all propritery so I can't post anything I work on.

I don't plan on working there much longer, so yes, you are correct in your assessment.

I've never played with one of these mice so I couldn't say one way or the other.  I always had a mental block against roller mouses(the cheap ones).  I always ended up trying to move them around on the desk.......

Solidworks 09' doesn't support a serial spaceball so it wouldn't work for you anyways.

If you model all day long then I'd really reccomend one.  If you look around you can find one for cheap.  You can get one for $55.00 new but it only has two buttons.  Just look here:

http://www.3dconnexion.com/

And if you look around you can find some really good deals.  I got lucky becuase my buddy in purchasing found this one for less than half price, that's how I ended up getting it.

What CAD program do you use?

Was just looking at those the other day.

Does the 'mouse' actually increase your productivity or is it just something that's nice to have?

We use Vectorworks.  It's an overwhelming piece of shit for anything mechanical, but it works okay for modeling/lighting/ect which is what we mostly do.

I will hopefully have one of those this week, I don't want the space shuttle control model, just the little round nub that weighs about 5 lbs.

Modeling can be done just fine on a 2-button mouse as I have done for years, but that thing looks freakin awesome.

ahhh damn you i would to have one of those, im thinking of just getting the small laptop one for now.

if youve ever done 3d modeling and drafting, space balls take a ton of strain of your wrist, instead of constantly moving the mose back and forth to zoom in and out you just tilt the ball slightly.  very nice. wish i worked for a company that bought me shit.

My company owns it and its most likely not compatible with anything anymore.

Like I said before, you can do an engine swap just fine with an adjustable wrench and vice grips but the guy with the full Snap-On tool set will probably get it done alot faster with less headaches.  Its just another tool to get shit done faster and easier. What used to take 5 mouseclicks and alot of scrolling on the screen is replaced with one button.  They say the average is 20 to 30% improvement in efficiency.  So if you've been modeling for 2 years you could have saved yourself 4 months of work.
