Tig Welding Aluminized
« on: August 30, 2009, 01:08:19 PM »

I was working on a downpipe for RatCityRex yesterday and no matter how much cleaning I did I could not keep the shit from getting contaminated.  Is there anyway around this?  I would clean it with MEK, hit it with the red conditioning pads on my die grinder, reclean with MEK still got nasty.  What do you guys do to get the shit clean?

I grind the pipes down to get the aluminized shit off, then weld it. Works great. Doesn't look like you got it all off to me.

I usually use green cookie wheels to grind it all the way through. You will also need to go further back than you think.

i just take a red pad and go to town on it. you will see 2 shade of metal. one is just the coating getting polished up, you need to go deeper, then you will see the steel under the coating.

and like cs said go more then you think.

youre not gonna get color out of aluminized steel. its going to look grey and shitty. only time ill tig that shit is if its something low stress that i can just rip a quick fuse pass on and i usually wear a mask and breath as little as possible.

glavanized can very well kill you, aluminized is not nearly as harmful. i wouldnt weld galvanized even with a mask outdoors. aluminized will give you a sore throat/cold symptoms/raging migraines. thats what i get anyways

that and putting 2 welds on a pipe won't kill you. unless your huffing the shit.

I just hold my breath and make a pass, then use the air hose to cool /blow away fumes. it works.

no lye is potassium hydroxide, KOH a base-dont get this in your eyes
muriatic acid is and acid, im pretty sure Hydrocloric HCl-you get this in your eyes, wash it out quick and you will prob be ok

dont worry about acid, worry about bases.

It's rhmt's imitation of HT's nutswinging. Everyone know's weir is one of the local dieties. :noel:

I don't mind mig'ing aluminized for exhausts. It lasts a lot longer than mild steel. Welds are all that rust, and easy enough to clean occationally. 409 or 304 will be better rust-free shit, if you can payu for it.

Aluminized is not toxic to weld.

You don't need to prep the surface beyond basic cleaning.

The coating is designed to be welded through directly.

Don't wire brush it off around the welds or you would have been better off getting mild.

You can get some color in aluminized, but it's more technique then anything else.

Toys you know what you are a fucking idiot.... i have personally got color out of welds on mild steel and aluminized. it is all in the technique like stated by crmb.

And only thing i have noticed is that when tig welding aluminized it burns the edges and becomes flaky where you welded, a wire brush and that is gone. and also the occasional dirt in the welds.

Corey,
I was pointing out that the specific material in question isn't any more toxic the standard mild steel (atleast according to the material spec sheets). I would agree you should probably not be directly breathing in welding fumes regardless of the material being processed.
