It is possible, but not easy. You have to be pretty fucking strong to cut one out. And you'll need the tool/tools to do it. They make a sawzall attachment for doing it, but you're more likely to break the windshield using it unless you're experienced operating that tool.

Personally it's a BITCH and if you fuck up at the end you just wasted all your time/money. Plus it's hard to seal them in well without experience and without the right adhesive/sealer shit. I'd shop around and find a place that can do a windshield on the cheap. If you were local I'd send you to my uncles and he'd hook you up.

piano wire and heat gun

This

I recommend practicing on the broken windshield first. Ive done it before and it wasnt bad but not fun either way.
The heatgun just makes it a lil easier to cut through the urethane.

it sucks ive done it, but the junkyards do it so they must have a  fast way.   i dont know if it was just the car we did but any kind of wire was pretty much worthless. even when we heated it/the wire too

then you need to buy that spendy window weld and gasket or it will probly leak, even if you do it might still leak if you dont get the old window out clean

god dam that is a shitty job, you will probably break a couple before you get one out. Well worth the 200.00 for a new one!

high test strength fishing line and leather gloves.  use it like a saw.  if you have some saw like wire, that would be better.  floss works too.  with floss you have to saw more then can "cut"

- used to work at junkyard.

im sure you were kidding about racing without a windshield (but if you werent no track allows no windshield)

i use the steel wire from e-brake cables, poke a small hole through the window weld, feed in wire, wrap around a screwdriver on both ends, hit the steel wire with a torch for about 4 seconds and start sawing, it will already be hot from the torch so it takes away the hectic start. anyone whos done it knows about the pain in the ass it is to get it hot.

or you could go buy the heated window tool for 300 bucks. but that would ruin the cost effectiveness :)

id really like to see anyone remove the front window we did out of some bonneville with fucking floss.  we got window removal wire from the parts store and it worked like shit, it looked like brass or some gold color braided wire, we ended up kicking it out from the inside, which was also a bad idea.

i pretty much hate paying anyone to do anything to anyone in my immeidate familys cars and id probly pay someone before id do another windshield.   i dont know maybe its easier in a civic or somthing. good luck

tried taking one out once, thought oh lets slip the wire in and have another guy put his feet against the glass to help push it out. well about an hour later when we almost have the bead cut all the way around we hear a ripping/zipping sound and the fuckin glass just zips a crack all the way accross on the bottom. great, from now on i just let a company do it.

i had a baseball shatter my front windshield at 1900. called safelite, they were out at 1000 next morning, fixed it on the side of the road by the apartment. took the guy 35 minutes. 180 bucks. well worth it.

wd-40 and a lighter softens the glue but if you put too much heat into the glass you fuck up the lamination or break it.

I have seen a hack that turns the heated wire in a toaster into an element to cut the windshield. It was ghetto as fuck , but worked.

I have seen a piano wire, hooded to the two ends of a soldering gun. Same thing ghetto as fuck, but worked well.

When you pay your employees $7/hour why worry if the job takes two hours?

FWIW, call around and get prices. Some shops will be cheaper than others. Like at my uncles shop he hates working on some cars in the past that were a bitch, so they give a high quote on those cars. But on some he might have done a 100 of and they're easy, and he does them cheaper than average knowing he can do the job in 20 minutes.

I always watch the  :mexi: in the junk yards do it by cutting the hood latch cable out and then using it to cut the windshield out. They also were thick leather gloves.
