Fred is coming to understand a few things about you lot...
« on: September 10, 2009, 07:37:36 AM »

In particular, I have a good feel for this smiley now :  :mexi:

I've been in the USA  for about 2.5 weeks now, all in Cali so far and in many ways I quite like it, but I understand the mexican references in a fairly thorough way now :-) Today I had my first feed of Wendy's in 2.5 years - it sucked, possibly because of the ethnicity of the staff at that branch!

Anyway, I'm in San Diego now, and heading east to the other side in my new (old) car pretty soon. If any of you bastards feel like meeting that weird argumentative kiwi (and don't want to break my knees) flick  me a pm with an address and I'll see if I can find some time to swing past for a beer/wine/feed/whatever.

current plan is something like :

sd
pheonix
slc
denver
somewhere along the i80
chicago
niagra falls/canada border
nyc
maybe north of there for a day or two
new jersey
baltimore
nashville
atlanta
florida
atlanta ditch car for sale
fly to la
fly home to nz for some HMT burrnout goodness :-)

Also, in-n-out fucking rocks, fast food as it always should be, cheap and good quality! Epic win there.

Fred.

I'm 3.5 hours north of Atlanta, hit me up with a little forewarning and I'll introduce you to the local microbrews.

Thanks for the tip, I'll be missing in-n-out pretty quickly :-( I was planning to try to do the trip on burger, fries, shake and half a bottle of wine a day until I found out it was west coast only.

I want a delicious burger that i can not cook at home and 5 guys is sorta like heres a patty we cook it and give it to you on bread.  thats it. Whataburger never did anything for me either soley for that reason.

Hey, I like a fancy burger with mango and avacado and christ knows what else on it as much as the next prick, but sometimes you just want some good simple cheap food that isn't shit. in-n-out isn't spectacular, it's just simple good food. They go to the extent of growing their own :

cows
tomatoes
lettuce
potatoes
onion

etc.

The beef is less than 7 days dead with no fucking steroids etc. The spuds are peeled and pressed into chips on site while you watch. The staff are paid a  bit extra and are friendly and helpful and are yet to screw up my order in the slightest.

I'm 3.5 hours north of Atlanta, hit me up with a little forewarning and I'll introduce you to the local microbrews.

Cool, I'll be at Atlanta for the longest time out of what is left. The only place I *may* stay longer is Pheonix because FreeEMS is going into my Volvo there :-) (hopefully, and fuel only, but still,  should be a bit of an occasion for celebration)

Let me know if you make it to th PNW and ill introduce you to my foot in yiour clam you bloody poof!!!!

I probably won't be up in that corner on this trip, but the whole road trip thing is going so well that I can see myself taking a 3 month break  in a few years and doing it again in a better car :-)

5 Guys is damn good.

Yeah, it's just a simple patty and burger, but it costs about the same as fast food and is 10x better.

The french fries are actually made there (you'll see boxes of potatoes stacked around the place), the patties aren't machine made cheap beef frozen shit you get from fast food...fuck, the jalepenos are even fresh, green, and crispy.

Fuck yes

Enjoy the USA.

Don't think anyone claimed they're the best...but please tell me what chain of their size serves burgers anywhere near as good for the price.  Sure, ma' & pop places can make better burgers, but they're rarely as convenient :P

Whining about a brown paper bag?  WTF?  Do you need a colorful McDonald's one with pictures and puzzle games on it?

I buy food for the flavor.  Don't give a fuck what kind of bag it comes in.

+1. It's amazing that people judge shit by the bag or box. Especially when we're talking about cheap and good shit.

Also, the less money they spend on marketing and colorful boxes/bags, the cheaper they can feed me.

I'm fine with that, and personally prefer a fresh greasy burger in aluminum foil and fries in a styrofoam cup to crap that's been under a light for an hour in pretty packaging :P  They're a large enough chain, a long time ago, that they could have switched to more appealing wrappers...but the cheap paper bag makes me feel somewhat like I'm at a local eatery and not at a franchise that's on every street in the country.

Would never claim they're the best.  Most people on here can probably cook a better one, but for a place I can quickly get to and spend $6-8 dollars on a quick meal -- fuck anyone else.

Five Guys > In n Out

I've never eaten at a Five Guys, but I'm going to agree wholeheartedly.

When I had flown back home from FL, my buddy decided to make a surprise road trip to Cali JUST for In n Out Burger.

Worst 30 hours ever fucking spent on the road. Seriously, it wasn't good at all. I'd rather eat at McD's. We made sure we went to a major traffic one in San Fran too.

When I first drove into Atl, I met up with a guy from another forum and he showed me around town and we ended up going to Five Guys since I told him I wanted to eat a good burger from his side of the Country. I was not disappointed. They even have peanuts you can snack on while you wait.

Five Guys > In n Out
Well, I sure hope you are right, and if you are, I'll be snapping a timer pic of myself in front of one of those bastards too! :-)

I've got to warn you guys, I am the pussy fucking panzy wanker you all thought - I drink wine.

I rarely drink beer (though it's a good refresher when you are hot) and I don't drink spirits, mostly because I'd probably just throw up! One day I may drink some of my old mans fine whiskeys but not quite yet.

The good news is that I bought so much fine spanish wine the other day (400usd/17 bottles) that there may be some left when I get that far LOL. I just love that shit. I have some pics, maybe later.

About the better than volvo car : It could just be a volvo with "stick" + boost + twin cam + sway bars + shocks + stiffer ( but not lower) springs. It's a pretty nice car, but heavy and fucking slow. I had it slightly sideways on some gravel (need to do that again properly and with vid) and I did a run up and down mulholland drive pretty quickly (quickly for a bag of jelly) - twice. It'll do the trick, but it IS slow.

Fred.

You fail as an alcoholic, but you get bonus points as a wino.  Do you like Italian wines?  I can obtain some Amarone/ripasso or suchlike and we can discuss the cultural merits of the respective tipple.

I stayed 3 days with a very wealthy man at Venice beach the other day and he took me to dinner at a very nice Italian place, the wine was superb, better than any of the spanish stuff I usually drink, but probably cost about the same per glass as I pay per bottle. So yes, treat me to some nice smooth italian wine and i'll bring the spanish stuff :-)

I usually drink the Campo Viejo Reserva and Gran Reserva and the Marques De Riscal Reserva - they are all consistently good and in the 16 - 21 buck range. Tonight I have one called Roda that is usually 60 bucks a bottle but on special at 25, should be nice, can't wait.

I haven't found a cali wine to match them, yet. not for a comparable price anyway, and I'll be fucked if i'll spend more than about 30us on one.

I deserve my bonus prize as a wino, the last 10 days in england I drank every night, mostly wine. then i drank again the first night in spain, 11 days straight. Now I have enough wine to kill me 3 times or more just sitting in the car :-)
