Ring gap question. I need help
« on: March 11, 2009, 07:36:06 PM »

Can someone either point me in the right direction or help me out here? I lost a piston due do a Injector failure on the dyno last friday. And Im about to order new pistons. How do you determin what the correct ring gap is. Its for a 88mm piston. either going to be Ross Pistons or CPs. Just going to re hone to cross hatch again and put back together. Help a cracker out

If you use CPS and only rehone it, it will be JUST about perfect out of the box..

IF you can do math...

If you re machine the block  MNake sure to go to .0045 piston to wall...

I was there at 87.5mm when I pulled my shit apart. After the rehone (I opted to have a machine shop do a straight hone to it) It was out at around .00575. The new 87.5mm rings I bought were perfect for the bore size. They needed NO filing. They were PERFECT.

The motor was BARELY louder and obviously it makes retarded power. STILL... WIth the same pistons it had in it before.

Remember this  too:
]
Ring sets are manufactured to fit specific
bores. For every .001” over the intended bore size,
ring gap will increase by .00314”

So do I want to go .003 or .004 or .005 over the piston diameter for heat swelling tolerance. Remember here. Im a robotics programmer not a engine builder. But Brian thanks for your input here and on the tele.

YOU have nothing to do with it

youjre machinist does...

Ill make it easy for you

The pistons have the tolerance built into them (the reccomended tolerance - so to get .001 bigger, the bore should be opened up .002 ... Just take the machinist your pistons and tell im you want .0045 piston to wall, hell figure it out)

Thats why you take him the pistons

so..................
1 Buy Pistons and rings from CP
2 Take your shit to your machinist
3. Have him bore your shit to 88.5mm  (If you are putting new pistons in it dont be gay, BORE IT)
4. Piston to wall should be .0045  CP reccomends .0035, GO TO .0045
5. Set ring gap to the spec outlined in the PDF i sent you
6. WHen you asemble, make damn sure you set the rings as per the info iin the PDF above.

7 Make power
8. Suck my nuts

OK doulbe check my tired/cracker/flat lander ass here

88.5mm piston/25.4====='s 3.484inches

3.484*.0065"turbo tolerance"='s .0226 ring gap for top ring
3.484*.007=='s .0243 ring gap on second ring
And oil ring set @.02?????

Sound right, just as a example of the piston not the bore
So the bore size I would actually want is 3.486 and then redo the math for ring gap.

Hold my hand for me  lol    Where to get the ring file?
