Fuel management for carbed setups
« on: September 27, 2009, 02:48:54 PM »

I'm looking to turbo my '67 mustang but I'm at a stopping point with fuel management. Someone had previously said I want a boost referenced FPR but I'm not sure if that is the right solution.

What do you guys do for fuel management on carb setups?

1:1 aka boost referrenced FPR, mechanical secondary carb with brass floats, MSD-BTM.

Whether the fuel pump is fine for your power level, or you need to go from a carb hat to a carb box, is up to your specific setup.  I'm not a big carb guy so I can only help you with basic theory and not specific parts selection.

Hotrex has an Aeromotive unit for sale.

I run an aeromotive RRFPR with a Walbro external 255 pump.. The best place to look for info on carb'd turbo setups is

theturboforum.com

look in the blow through section.

Joseph was steering your towards the right track. I would change out the brass floats in exchange for nitrophyl ones. They work better and do not crush like the brass ones. What engine is in your car? I usually lock out the timing as the msd btm's have been known to fail. Although msd has some boxes out there that you can program your own curve which is nice. Depending on the engine there are also distributors that you can program your own curves into. You could also play with the stock ones. Limiter bushings, welding up advance slots and such. Really depends on what you'd like to do. Carb mods you can keep to a minumum if you are not gonna get crazy with the power level. I highly reccomend you look into boost referenced power valves though.

Good to know, I've seen maybe two BTMs in my life and used exactly zero.  Seems like MSD's older analog-era gear is crap.

It served its purpose.  Atleast they have begun to develop new digital products to keep up with the technology curve and the demands of new performance engines

My experience with the DIS 4 HO was short lived.  Worked well, then began dropping channels.  I need to send it in.  I'll be sticking with the distributor here on out though

I'm not knocking.  The Digital-6 and Digital-7 are a decade or more old designs and they do a great job.  I also love every MSD coil I've ever touched.

I just can't recommend 6A, 7A, and apparently BTMs.

That was my experience with them and a few others around here. Although it was a few years back I see the turbo forums has still seen the same problems lately. I have seen the diaphragms fail in my own box personally.

;D Yes you cant run the brass floats boost will CRUSH them. btm has work well for me for the last 3 years. Have an excellent source for carb rework for boost and stok chevy fuel pump with fuel return line plugged and boost referance is good for 7 psi daily driven.
