Bastards!

Were the Buells worth a damn?

Any past/preset Harley owner I've talked to said they weren't the most reliable of bikes, except the ones that were so dedicated they would never utter a harsh word about The Harley.

I'm guessing Buells are a completely separate product line, but no idea if they share tech/parts/failures.

Hah.

My uncles are getting to be old, grew up with a few harleys...one said he's too old to fuck with them anymore, the other has his eyes set on a honda aero, said he doesn't feel like paying a lot more money for a less-reliable and less-comfortable harley.

Just was wondering, I've never owned any of them :P

Separate line, but they use HD leaky teeth rattling motors.  Most had crappy to decent performance, but SV's and RC51's supposedly steamroll most Buells.  The Blast from what I've read is only a blast because you are like "Whoa I'm on this ugly slow piece of shit that makes my brain bounce around inside my skull!  Sweet!"

totally wrong.

you have no clue.

all the Hd powered buells had extra balancers and used good mounts, minimal vibration.

mine never leaked a drop. very very reliable. buells are easily the longest lasting "sport" bikes.

no valve adjustments, no chain adjustments... i put 13000 miles on mine only changing the oil. stock belt, etc...

the 1200 is about as fast as older i4 600s

they were built to corner, i easily schooled lots of people on liter bikes, some of it is rider skill some of it is the bike.

they are great street bikes

i've ridden with people on sv650s, sv1000s, and RC51 and easily left them in the dust

So the reviews are full of lies?

probably.

there are a lot of i4 fanbois that if something doesn't go 170mph it sucks.

i owned one. the vibration was minimal. it was extremely reliable. extremely low maintenance. it stopped great, handled great, sounded great. it had 108hp and 88ft-lbs

13k miles with NO MAINTENANCE. try that with any other sportbike

if you ask 95% of the people who have owned one, they'll say the same thing

so obviously there are fastest bikes in a drag race... the 1125r is pretty fast.

The 1125 is why I said most Buells were crappy to decent.

for what? drag racing? top speed? what?

the xb12s was in the top 5 for handling street bikes, don't remember who made the list though

from what I've read

I research before considering major purchases.  Much of that is reading reviews.  And to say single cylinders don't have vibration is just wrong.

its also has minimal vibration, yea its a thumper, but it has all the shit they could do to make it smooth.

my craptor = very little vibration, it was 700cc........

Meh.  The newer harleys are super reliable.  That off-balance engine design is annoying, and they aren't the best performers because of it unless you throw a pile of displacement at the problem.  The truth is somewhere between Dullard and Blissanus's imaginary lines in the sand, probably closer to Johnny's but it's not by much so don't let it go to your head there.

We just watched the video and discussed Buells here at the shop.  They don't sell, but we can't figure out why.  The price is right/cheap, they are odd duck cool without being an unreliable Ducati, and nothing's ever perfect so it's okay if the bike falls a little short in respect to total domination if it's a good performer and has a distinctive character that draws enthusiasts.

Sad, really.  I guess the Harley Davidson "America's Favorite Boatanchor - if you have to ask why you're three generations inbred" stigma in the crotch rocket circles kept the Buells from being the crossover bike they were meant to be.  If you meet some of the stereotypical Harley riders you understand why, fucking finger pointing at the ground fools because they're too good to wave like a normal person raised with manners.

BTW, single cyclinder is the very definition of off balance and vibration, Johnny.  Anyone with a Briggs & Stratton push mower, or 80s Yamaha Thumper, knows this.   :mexi:

there are huge differences between the thunderstorm motor and the 1125 motor.

they will not sound even remotely the same.  8)

rc51 is ok

sv1000 is complete garbage

Im actually somewhat sad to see this. Would I ever buy a buell? Probably not. Have I ridden a few, yes.
Why wouldnt I buy one...simply because I do not want a street bike. If I were in the market for a street bike and was going to thrown down $8-10g's, a buell would be in my thoughts, probably on top of the list. They are reliable, and they handle/brake amazingly well.

My opinion...90% of the people who bash them, both in speaking and writing about them on the internet are total and complete nut swingers of other brands. Its like someone saying "lets see you do with your nissan that I can do with my honda....argument".

To each there own I guess.

Yeah, I don't care, was just curious :noel:

The uncles haven't owned a Harley in a while, so maybe they are super-reliable now.

Their reasoning for not getting another was they weren't as smooth, were heavier, a lot more expensive, and more maintenance than newer bikes from other brands.  I'm sure the older unbalanced motors weren't the best for reliability.

Anyway.

When, if, I ever buy a bike, it'll be a high-maintenance sport bike :P

Didn't know there was another road racing fan here.  Yeah, fuck the Buell's.  I feel terrible for the Erik Buell, because he put so much time/effort/money into it, but christ.  They had to race the big ones against 600cc bikes just to be competitive.  Run them against something similar in that motor size range, like a 1098, and they get raped.  They are fun on the street though :)  They are good sport touring bikes, but they are not anywhere near the performance of the supersport bikes.

And how the fuck are they top 5 handling bikes?  That is laughable.  They are nice, but again, it's a sport touring bike.  The limits of the Buell are nowhere near the limits of the other sportbike options.

And the reason SV riders can smoke some of the Buell's around a track is that the SV650 is one of the most well balanced bikes for anything with more than 2 turns in the road.  I want one for a CCS-LW bike

Incidentally, I know several bikes that have gone 13k without any major maintenance.  You probably didn't beat on it though, if the tires only needed to be changed once....

you are clueless... and can't ride any of them to their limit so why would you even care. there are several places that have ranked the xb at the top in handling.

i can go pull up a bunch of races where the 1125r has beat the 1098s... the 1098r is faster... but its a pure race bike and not designed for the street.

a sv650 can't beat anything. sv650 = GIRLS BIKE. retarded looking piece of junk.

yea like which ones.

they all needed chains, they all needed valve adjusted...  ::)

i put 5k on the stock tires, and the rest on diablo stradas.

i rode the bike almost everyday, and carved corners almost everyday.
