sup guys, well after the greatful help from JD, im able to finally run down these grimlens that haunt me with my 88 hf.
quick rundown
d16z6
xenofag conv harness
chipped socketed p28 (fleabay purchase)

im getting fuel and spark.  but when i turn the key on the CEL stays on CONSTANT, so i turn ignition off, do the jumper deal for reading codes, it still stays on constant. ive heard this is a code 0, which is the ecu.

Would i still be getting good spark if the ecu was bad? is there a quick way without puttin my ecu in another car to see if it works?(no friends w/ civic)

forgot to mention, it has a stock d16z6 basemap chip installed from the previous owner, he said he was also the one that chipped/socketed it!!!!

could it be a bad socket job (HAHA ok enough)

Check the solder joints.  You could try to cut J1 to revert it back to stock, but IIRC sloppy solder joints can still fuck with it even when J1 is cut.


Dunno, I have two dead socketed ECUs sitting here, but I am too lazy/busy to find out what is wrong with them.

Can you post pics of the ECU?  Chip, socket, the quality of the soldering job on the bottom side of the board?

throw another known good ecu in it just to make sure its not something else,

Ok after opening it up I see the chip in there all crooked and one of the pins sticking on and not in the socket so I remove it and straighten that pin up and reinstall the chip. Well it still does the solid cel. So I flip the cip around. Still does it. I istall my obd0 ecu I have and its turning off after primes the pump. So def ecu. I was looking it over and it seems he removed something at j12 is this suppode to be like that?  Pics commin when I'm at my comp. Currently on my blackberruy

J12 should be removed.

There is a possibility that the image on the chip has been corrupted.

If the ECU was socketed by the same ham fisted primate that installed the chip into the socket, then the chances are that the socket job is shit as well.

If the chip wasn't damaged from being inserted incorrectly, it was definitely fucked up when you installed it backwards.

Ok I pulled the chip out turn key on and the cel gous out like it should then 5sec later a cel appears I do the jumper and it read 2 flashes long pause then 3 flashes. This is all with the chip out

EDIT:

If you are not getting a solid CEL without the chip installed, then J1 is not there.


I can't really tell what code you are getting.  I ASSumed it was a 23 from what you posted, but it could be a 2 and a 3 or a 20 and a 30.

23 should be invalid as it is for a knock sensor, and the P28 does not have a knock board.

If we see the backside of the 28 pin socket/20pin etc it will be more obvious of your problems

ya upon lookin at j1 it looks as if it got broke off... the nipples are still on the ecu just nothing spanning between them

Someone trashed the ecu trying to solder omg failure



Then removed j1 which is the jumper which switches to read the external socket/new 28 pin eprom in attempt to keep the ecu in working order



From the looks of it that ecu is done and most likely has major damage that even if attempted to fix may not happen


In reality from all the burn marks they were using a very high power gun which will destroy the board.

Looks like shit.  Most of the burn marks just look like conformal coating mixed with an abundance of flux form the overuse of solder.  I am a blind fuck,a nd my soldering looks better than that.

At least they tried to replace the main power capacitor.

is there any hope? i have soldering skills (not much but some) what should i do? de-solder all joints and resolder them?

or just try to jump j1 and see if it works? what is used in the j1 jumper?

use any kind of wire for J1.  I use a leg off a cap or resistor that I soldered in elsewhere when I chip the ecu.

I'd hit all the pins with an iron and some fresh solder to reflow them, jumper J1, and install a known good burned chip the proper way.
You never know it could have just been something stupid.

Those aren't burn marks, that's flux from cheap solder that wasn't cleaned off.

Everyone's correct that J1 isn't jumped.  With a chip incorrectly plugged in, it can cause electrical issues resulting in limp home mode.  If the chip is oriented correctly then, with J1 unjumpered, it should merely act as if unchipped.

I can't see CN2 pin 1 clearly enough to comment.  The solder work isn't the best but it isn't horrible from what little I can tell.

What no one has noticed yet is the socket is installed backwards.  The notch in the chip goes towards the ECU plugs, sir, don't forget that.

Your socket is installed backwards so its needs to be desocketed


Then install a new socket correctly


Im sure there are numerous other things wrong as well



Oh yeah your chip is garbage too as Jd pointed out for installing wrong it as good as trash.

Meh, it may work.  I can't see too well with the low res pics, the joints look cold but it very well could work.  I've seen some shady shit run for years, it is what it is.

I'd not attempt to reverse the socket as you can only heat the board so many times before it becomes damaged.  3-7 times, depending on your experience and skill.  I'd reflow the joints and let the socket be if I came across it.
