Alright, I have a laptop that I need to restore, the problem is that I have a TON of pictures of my kid on there, and the mrs. will be pissed if they are lost.  what are my options here.  the computer logs on in safe mode, yet only stays that way for a few minutes before I get a blue screen.  what do you nogs think?

You can run Knoppix from USB, use it as your OS to burn the pics to cd before formatting the HD.

Getting a BSOD after being on for a few minutes makes me think you've got a hardware issue of some sort related to heat.  Are you doing anything on the computer to cause it to BSOD or does it just do it after a few minutes each time?

If it's cold outside where you live, take it outside and see if it takes longer for it to BSOD.  If that's the case just sit outside and copy all your pics to a flash drive as fast as you can.  If you don't have a flash drive you can try sending them to a different computer over a wireless network, though it might not be as fast.

If it is indeed a hardware issue, formatting the HD won't help.

Just taking a shot in the dark here if what the guy above me posted doesn't work.

i agree with both previous posters.  it sounds like it could be overheating but that is not necessarily the case. try the cd first. if  it works long enough to burn your shit on a cd then the laptop probably isn't overheating.

i don't think that it's a hardware issue becuase you can't boot it in normal mode, therefore I think some of the proccesses are fucked up and need to be reinstalled.
If I were you, I would buy an external hard drive, then download Roadstarter boot disc. Burn that onto a disc.

Plug in the USB extrenal hard drive, and boot off the cd.
When the menu comes up, select choice 1.



Wait until it loads up all the way, it will look like windows 98 and you can access all your shit.
From there on, just copy and paste all the files you want over to the external hard drive.

thanks for the input.  it will actually load up in normal mode, but the BSOD says that there is a page load error.  I literally only have a few minutes, so burning the pics to a CD is out of the question.  I'm gonna try the flash drive.

you could end up fucking it up more....

have you tried running hijack this and disabling all services.... or try the start > run > shutdown -s and then before the timer runs out go start > run and type in shutdown -a and keep flip flopping between the 2... worked for me before to keep the bsod away while i burned a cd... its a pita but fuck it it worked...

Sounds like he has been rooted. Pull the Hd, and run it as a external. But beware what ever comp you hook it up to might get infected if it is runing a Windows Os.

Edit: You can also run ubuntu as a live cd, justt have to burn it as a iso. Then you can get a plug in that will let you see whats in the C drive. After you have that going just plug in a flash drive and pull what you need. http://www.ubuntu.com/

Yeah, my experiences it's not worth the trouble.

Reinstall of windows takes 15-45 minutes if the PC is worth a shit, and you'll have a fresh installation without any issues.
