VW Beetle Idle problem please help
« on: November 30, 2009, 05:24:45 PM »

Putting this up for a friend having problems with his car.
Facts:
Car: 71 Super Beetle
Motor: 1600cc AS41
Carburator: Solex H30/31PICT
Mods: Header back dual muffler "super quiet" exhaust\
History: Carburator rebuilt/replaced in the last 3000 miles

Problem: So the car idled then all of the sudden it won't idle and just dies, runs fine when on the gas but won't idle no changes or adjustments where made. The engine was sprayed clean with a pressure washer. All ports and openings were filled with rags and taped up. Car ran fine for two days. He installed some speakers in the front and the next day is when the problem started. I don't know enough about these motors or carbs and was looking for some advice.  Anything would be helpful.
Also it has this wierd gay oil bath air filter that I know nothing about don't know if that is a problem or what.

Attempts to fix it:
We pulled the air box off and still same problem.
Messed with the air adjustment screw on the side and nothing.
Played with the throttle adjustment screw that holds the throttle open got it to not die but it's way too high. (don't know the rpm doesn't have a tach.)

Edit: Added attempts

Carburator: Solex H30/31PICT

lol

In all seriousness, first thing that comes to mind is vacuum leak.  Start looking around the base of the carb, paper gaskets are suspect. carb cleaner is your friend.
