alright so i flashed my shit a while back and all was well with the world for a while.  I have 2 USB wireless adapters a Dlink DWL-120 and a Linksys WUSB54GSC thingy.  my issue is i can not get these pieces of shit to work in one specific location.  in my garage they don't work, its only like 50 foot from teh router maybe like 60 or so and i can practically drive around the block with a laptop and never loose it.  any laptop/wii or cell phone has no issues anywhere in my garage or anything.  Its just these goddamn dongles.  I have tried 3 different PC's and like 2-3 different OS' and i cant get them to stay connected.

Basically it will see it for a minutes and try to connect.  then it will say it cant connect and if you refresh the Networks list its gone.  you don't see my network.

wtf.  I can take the dongle and plug it into other PC's and they work fine. just not specifically in my garage.


I posted a thread on the DD-=wrt forums but i didnt get anywhere there either.

Well honestly that's what made me check it out in the first place and afterward i can keep my signal like around the block practically.  i mean i have no issues with laptops of game systems at all.

Henry, in my experience USB wifi is a glitchy piece of shit technology.  Just get a proper PCI based wifi card, or string some CAT5

the problem is that if the dingle cant actually send back a response strong enough to the router, it will time out and lose connection.

getting the signal is half the battle. sending it back is the other half.

i did a little homework and found teh 84 watt limit on the dd-wrt forum since its shipped at like 24 i bumped it up to i believe around 50.  everyone seems to agree that is a safe power level with no fan or cooling and its been running for months.  i am fairly sure i bumped it back down to 24 ad tried with the same results though. 

In fact now tahat i think about it this is exactly what my issue was to begin with and i thought that the stock Linksys shit wasn't strong enough to push signal.  so THEN i flashed it to DD-wrt and im still in the same exact boat.  Ill give it one more shot but im bout 99% ive tried before.

i know... but a proper antenna is the way to go, not bumping the power.

Ive been meaning to pick up one of those metal mesh "picnic style" plate covers or a metal mesh collander to craft a sweet anntenna from but just wasnt sure it was my problem.

dude. yah. stealing wifi became a full time job while i was in greece. talk about lame. lets just say that after reading 5 books on wifi and wifi security, i learned a lil bit here and there, but still fried my brain.

the thing you want to do is instead of bumping up the signal strength ( you will introduce a certain degree of noise the more you bump it to to the point where you just get nothing but noise. overheating isnt that big of a concern. ) what you want to do is instead of pointing the signal everywhere, you point it in the places you want it to go.

I understand decibels, gain, attenuation, signal distortion, friss equation, and bunch of other random yet interlinked bullshit on a level you do not.   An antenna doesn't do shit if there's no ass behind the signal.
