Parental unit is looking to pick one up, probably will regardless of my advice since I am the failure in the family. After she wrecked the 07 forrester she wants something "safer" so the volvo name of course came up. Anyone been in one/driven one etc?

Well it has more airbags and a nicer interior than the forester, that's about it.  Volvo's AWD system isn't quite as good as Subaru's (don't know if it snows where you live).  The volvo probably has better crash ratings than the forester, although I thought they both did well.

Why would a forester not be safe enough?  Light SUV capability with a low enough center of gravity to avoid being rollover prone.

Had one, was a POS and dumped it for a profit due to getting like 10k+ off from the NY dealerships giving discounts to morgan stanley employees... actually same shit happened with the subaru, purchased brand new for about 17k, drove for about 3 years, wrecked and got around 17k from the insurance company. My aunt has an 08 I think.  I sat in it.  The interior was nice.  It seemed well featured.  I believe Volvo is known to have one of the worst Sat Nav systems, if that matters.  I can't speak much for how it drives or if the car is actually any good.  I'd buy a Consumer Reports and a Car and Driver book and see what they say.  I'd say 80% of the time they are accurate.  I believe each car they get to drive for 6-8 months so their reviews are typically better than the average "I had the car for 3 days and I sat around and watched football for 8 hours on Sunday" reviews.

From what I've -read- it will meet her needs appropriately. She bought one today anyways, 27k for the 3.2 base model... I'll have to putter around in it a bit if I visit NY for the holidays which isn't terribly likely.
