Well I suppose the same theory would apply for larger tubing. With larger tubing the sides probably would deflect though. Nice find.

i don't know if i would want to make a cage using that method, but i would have to try it first and see how much it crushes the pipe.  wonder how thich of a material you could do that way

I've wanted to make my own mandrels for some time now, it shouldn't be too hard with my lathe.  That's an excellent source of base radiuses to weld material onto/lathe off.

Fill with sand, same as sand bending with heat.

i have a big old lathe to. if i ever get around to building one of these things i'll do just that, fill the shoe in with weld bead and cut it nice and round on the lathe.

Are you guys referring to bend dies as mandrels? I'm lost.

Remember anything over 3*diameter, with a relatively decent wall thickness doesn't need to be mandrel bent. It will make no difference. If we bend it here on a mandrel bender, we would only run 3 of 5 tools. (no mandrel and no wiper) as they would make no difference. So even some of the simplest benders will work just fine for this type of work.

This is a mandrel:

This is a bend die:

I was just wondering, instead of making a die with a lathe and welder, couldn't you just bend up a larger, thick pipe as the base? If it has the same ID as your target pipe's OD, you'd bend it to shape and cut it in half (on the sides). You'd only need a few changes on that 1st link to accept a larger pipe as the first bend.

it would work, but it would be rather difficult to do right, i would imagine
