Rhmt springtester
« on: December 23, 2009, 04:03:54 AM »

i dont have anything fast, i figured id post this instead because every time i see one of those summit spring testers i want to fucking toss it in a garbage disposal. you know the ones that work in a vise. anyway you cant even tell how bad the springs are, (+/- 10% on a good day) the gauge is shit (not calibrated) and you have to guess on how parallel you think the vise jaws are. even if you had all the spring spec. it wouldnt even matter because the summit spring tester is crap. so if you thinking of buying one read this frist

^heres the spring tester i built a year ago for $80 (summit pos spring tester: $70)^

you can see it's just a 1/2 ton arbor press (hf $30) a 10 ton porta power cylinder (hf $20) a reasonably accurate 100psi gauge (https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=3880122223124971&item=21-1612-M&catname=hydraulic$20) and a  dial indicator and some mag base parts (hf$30)

this used to be my fuel pressure gauge i've had it kickin around since i was 18. the gauge for sale on SC is a process gauge and they are typ. +/- 0.5% accurate over the full scale, and has a 4 inch dial so you can actually fucking read it. the x2.26 on the face is the area of the cylinder ID not the piston, so the heaviest spring this setup will measure is 226lbs.

^this is the dial indicator setup just some mag base parts i had laying around, make sure the whole thing is parallel to the rack^

^this is the base, i just welded a sort chunk of steel to it so the dial indicator could touch it^

^this is the rack with a spring retainer welded to it. if i could do it again i would figure out a way to change retainers around. this way works good and centers the spring quickly. i pretty much only do neon stuff now so it dosnt really matter.^

this is an aluminum blank i cut down to the same length as the installed height of the spring. its used for zeroing the dial. you can see the pressframe flex about 0.0025 at 200lbs so you'll want to run the blank up to the pressure your testing at when you set zero, like it really matters because this thing is about 1000% more accurate than the summit tester anyway.

what the anus is the unit that the pressure gauge is threaded into, that shows the psi/force of the spring?

looks like a good little setup

yep, i dont have an item# but i think all the 10ton shortys are the same, with a 2.26 inch crossection area. it weighed my tubby ass within one pound so i never even bought check springs for it.

id say you want the 10 ton for this, because the five ton probably has a smaller inner diameter. with the 160psi gauge and the 10 ton cylinder (2.26 in2 cross section) (160 x 2.26 = 361) so you could easily test 330# springs. using the smaller cylinder with the same gauge may cut that number in half.

I did a little searching, and you can do this with a drill press if you want to save money. I guess it depends on how much pressure your handle can provide w/o breaking.
