Need some help wiring a 2 stroke motor - pocket bike
« on: March 23, 2009, 05:47:56 PM »

I picked up a pocket bike from a guy and somehow missed the fact it's a piece of shit. Anyways, I'm trying to get it re-wired because the previous owner messed everything up. Originally there were turn signals and an electric starter... Now it has a pull start and not much wiring. I'm just trying to get it to run and turn off when I want it to.

Originally there was a battery, but I don't think it's necessary if I wire it up right.

Any help on what goes where will be useful.

** any way to bring my post count over from HMT?

Small motors are pretty easy,  try this as a guide...

that motor is most likely uses points...try taking off the pull starter and see where the wires go to...as the motor turns and the stator passes the points, it should send a discharge to the coil, amplifying the charge as it exits to the spark plug...all the kill switch should do is ground that charge going to the coil, when you push it (kill switch)...i have the same project in my basement, just haven't gotten around to it yet

Alright, I took a look at it all and tried to make some progress.
First - No CDI.... it's like a goped.

So should the wire from the points go to the + on the coil?
what else is necessary to just get it sparking? I can worry about stopping it later.

Ever try locating a manual for the bike?

Ok, that's the simplest ignition on earth. See the wire hooked to the coil? Ground that and no spark. Un hook it and spark. You don't need 12V for the ignition system whatsoever. The wire hooked to the coil has another wire next to it going to ground. Those two wires should go to a kill switch, a SPST swtich.
