Title: RHMT project #6 - 2000 CRV
Post by: SloS13 on January 21, 2010, 02:29:08 PM
A few months ago, I bought this here 2000 CRV with the specific intention of BOOST.  It's 5-spd and AWD with 160k on the clock.

+1 internets for JD's advice

On Order or not installed yet:
Muffler
resonator
hangers
CDM cast manifold
adapter plate
intercooler
gauge pod

to order:
piping
flanges
clamps
beautiful exhaust tip
I'll probably need a slim fan for the AC.

Probably keeping it IWG.  If creep becomes a problem (which I don't anticipate) I'll switch to an external.  Shooting for 220-240whp.  Keeping AC/PS.

Should be cool.

If by sleeper you mean green wheels, Megan Racing CF wing and red neons....then yes.

Regarding the gate - I've got confidence in the internal gate, but if not - it's not gonna be a huge deal to go external

haven't thought of locking the center diff.  99% of the time it's gonna be a daily driver.  I'll have to find some dirt.

gauge pod installed...shittily.  OBX sucks donkey balls.  News at 11.

Its cold as fudge in the garage but I think I'm gonna go remove the exhaust.

I am between one of these (if I can find one) or a 4wd wagovan for my next car, both with the intention of boosting then raping on them offroad.

Don't know if your interested, but I have a bullseye 7cm housing with an oversized wastegate here somewhere.

Might be an 8cm now that I think about it.

holy shit $9k?!?  I got mine for $6k from a dealership.  I play hardball with the salesmen though.  They were asking I think $8900 originally.  The AWD 5-speeds are hard to find.  I was able to find 2 within about 200 miles in the span of about 2 weeks.  It's been wrecked but whoever did the work on it did a pretty good job.

Ordered my flanges.  Tomorrow I should be ordering my piping, flex-pipe, couplers and clamps.  Can't get datalogging to work to save my life.  Gonna try a different laptop tomorrow.

I found it on CL.  Some guy was parting out his eclipse and I got it for like $60 or $80.

Everything that could have gone wrong did getting the manifold/adapter plate/turbo all together.  Im gonna try welding it all together.  I so crazy.  Update tomorrow on the success or complete and utter failure of said endeavor.

Title: Re: RHMT project #6 - 2000 CRV
Post by: SloS13 on January 24, 2010, 11:49:49 AM
So what did go wrong?

First wrong move was to get an ebay adapter plate instead of a proper BMC one because I thought saving $20 was a good idea.

Second wrong move was - I couldnt find the proper sized allen-head hardware ANYWHERE in town so I used some random bolts I had laying around and grinded the exhaust housing to accomidate for the larger head sizes of the hex head bolts I was using

Lastly, some unexplained phenomena caused 3/4 of the turbo-to-adapter-plate bolts to cross-thread or something.  Went in, got hard to turn then quit turning alltogether and 2 of them's head were stripped by this point.

I've got all 3 parts chillin on a small BBQ grill on high.  Gonna try welding it all together then stick it back in the grill to cool.

Well good luck, sir. This will be one sick ass build. Question: Did your manifold require you to grind down the last 3 runners in order to bolt to head? My fucking manifold was drilled wrong by the chinese baby that drilled it.

I don't believe so.  I havent bolted it to the head yet but I rested it on 2 studs and there didnt seem to be any problem lining it up.   Right now I'm just hoping there arent any exhaust leaks due to a portion of the welding everything together job was a bit tough to get the wire into because of the stripped bolts.

Gonna remove the oil pan in anticipation of some stevemode lines today and remove the remainder of the exhaust.  gotta wait on my flanges to make the dp/exhaust.

Edit: Oh yeah, my welder's wire feed motor took a shit today - now only works on higher speeds.  Wonder what rebuilding the motor entails...I might try removing it today to see whats up.

Had a spare 2hrs today. Did work

(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Flh4.ggpht.com%2F_DZbmU0ldaJk%2FS19d_zYZ8UI%2FAAAAAAAAAzA%2FdvwEgSPzm2U%2Fs512%2F2010-01-26%252016.24.49.jpg&hash=e9d6642ed5e348a5ff290b8d48ce132123ef65bf)

coolant lines are crazy but I might actually cool this one. WG hitting the slave.  A couple degrees of clocking should fix that.  Hopefully I wont need to shorten the actuator arm, etc.

Feed done.  Return will be done when the JB Weld® cures

FMIC comes tomorrow.  Gotta get around to eyeballing some shit and make a http://www.mandrel-bends.com/ (http://www.mandrel-bends.com/) order

You need 2.5" or 3"

Last time I ordered from there I bought out their b stock mild steel bends and needless to say, 15 of anything looks a lot bigger in person

Do they make decent suspension bits for those?

It would look bad as hell set down a tiny bit with some DR's on all 4 corners.

Agreed.

I would think that you could pick up a set of GCs and Konis.  It is essentially a Civic/Integra suspension methinks.

oh hell no, just flat-blacking the FMIC.  The CRV just got a paint job before I bought it a few months ago.  I know people lower these things but that's at the bottom of my shit-to-do-list.

Fixed all of my fitment issues.  I had to modify the actuator bracket, add some washers for spacing it, clock about 5 degrees and take out a bit of the radiator fan shroud. AC fan fits perfect!

this is a sick build.  just cancelling out the trouble of B20 swapping haha.  i saw one in minneapolis lowered with a set of not too large wheels and blacked out tails.  it was very clean and immediately made me think that boosting one would be kinda cool.

i skimmed the thread, so i might have missed if there was a drivetrain issue.  can it handle more power?

From what little I've heard they seem to do okay.  I wont be doing any AWD drifting with it or many hard launches.  The rear wheels only kick in when the fronts slip

I dunno but I doubt I'd do that.  From what I've heard it would burn out stuff or something like that, plus its all mechanical

Got the exhaust done.  Bumped up the basemap I'm using but still lean as piss.  Gotta put an XP laptop together so I can get my tine on. If I wasn't 5 hours from j d I'd let him have the first stab at it.

edit: Bringing it to JD on the 20th.  Gonna richen it up and limp around till then.

why's that alwYs happen?  When I first got boosted first thefuel pump shit,
then the alt, then a fuse or two, before that everything was working just great.

Guess it's just scared of the boost yo

I got the tune decent enough to get to JD but now it's refusing to make boost.  I'm getting 3 psi.  I found a couple pinholes that I'll weld up tomorrow and I might have a warped outlet flange.  Hopefully I'll have it sorted out real soon.

I'm praying that its not the injector seals leaking.  It's kinda  :mexi: rigged

I think it is indeed the flapper.  When the turbo gets hot (probably due to engine movement and poor hot-pipe design, the chra and compressor housing rotate, changing the tension on the actuator.  That's gotta be it  8)

Edit: suspicion confirmed.  Now I gotta fix it and make powarz

Tamper with the alternator enough and you'll get 15+ volts w/o sweat. A few blown fused and ruined electronics, but no sweat.

Tuning went awesome besides the shitty MBC I got which was more of an annoyance than any sort of problem.  JD knows his shit 6 ways from Sunday.

The gauge is fine but at night it's TOO bright.  Pretty sure I got the auto-dimming hooked up right but I guess I should re-check that.

boost spike figured out I think.  WG actuator nipple was pressed against the intake, crushing the signal line.  I unhooked the MBC and intake, held 7psi like a rock. I should be good to go now.  (I bent the actuator nipple to stay out of the way)

Your boost spike is probably a result of the internal WG.  I think a EBC has the potential to control this better.  Are you still running Crome?  If so, be mad at JD for not hooking you up with Ectune so you could run an EBC on the cheap.

The internal gate spikes maybe 2 psi on it's own but with either of the MBC's installed it spikes much much worse.  If I cant figure that shat out I'll go EBC.

I've got a similar turbo/iwg on the miata and it's solid but my wastegate dumps into the exhaust after at least 16".  This one merges immediately after the turbo.  Wonder if that's fudging things up in the boost department.

UPDATES.  And how much did you get your crv for?

UPDATES.  And how much did you get your crv for?

No new vids but it runs awesome now.  I get maybe 2psi worth of spike for a split second then the boost stays pretty solid.  Got a couple of very tiny issues I need JD's help with (tuning related) and a tiny oil leak from somewhere.  I've got to get around to doing a catch can for this beast.

The miata is down with a mystery coolant leak so I've been DDing the CRV for a few weeks now.

Ran a Altima 3.5 on like 8 psi (was adjusting my MBC) and stayed with it.  It got maybe a car on me from 0-1/8th mile or so.  (racin on da mutha fuckin skreetz)

I seriously need some better tires and/or suspension. but I'm broke so it'll be a while

Sick! Wish we could get a 1/4 mile vid, that would make this thread awesome

Oh, I got it from a stealership for $6200 out the door IIRC.

I might be having a roommate move in (long story) and he's a car guy so if he moves in I'm sure I'll end up at the ole 1320

I didin't read through the thread but if someone else has not already mentioned, You DO NOT want to have your wideband sensor in your downpipe it will foul out the wideband sensor without the heated element turned on. Just an FYI, Ive made the mistake multiple times.

Doesnt that really depend on how long your downpipe is?

Mine is technically in the mid-pipe.

Why would you turn the heater off on your wideband?

um, dont you have a switch to shut the wideband off (so you drive around and the wideband is off, aka the heating element.)

It doesnt matter where in the exhaust that it is really, it will still load up and waste 60 dollars on a sensor. I was just pre-warning you  O0

The wideband is powered by switched ignition, with a master switch/LED/FAC button neatly hidden by the hood latch.  He's not running it around in the off position, everything's good in the hood.

ahh ok, i just saw that and what he said about shutting it off whenever he wanted. but as you know driving around with it off is not good. Just letting the masses know.

IDK if he's posted pics, but his wideband control mounting is fucking ingenious.  You need to see it, Rossnoggin, you would appreciate.

aww you are too kind.

Reason I hooked it up that way is so that I could turn it off if I'm say fucking with the datalogging and don't feel like running the engine or testing the fuel pump without running the engine.  Any time I'd want ignition power without running the motor.  I didnt understand where you were coming from but now it makes sense.  I'm super anal about runing power to the heater when the engine is on and NOT running the heater when the engine isn't on.

FWIW the heaters are rarely the first thing to go on a wideband sensor. It's also very uncommon for that supposed "wet thermal shock" when the cold engine spits shittons of condensed water onto the hot element. If you were super anal you'd already have it in a location that doesn't funnel all water right to the sensor. :P

BTW was it ever dyno'd? I can't recall seeing any numbers.

Did you notice a difference when you swapped on the b18 intake manifold?  And what was on there first-- a giraffe manifold or the b20 on that kinda looks like an ls?

That looks like Chris Miller's latest dyno graph.  Then I saw the URL and its a big single Supra, lol.

Seriously though, what kinda numbers did it make?

Eh, some.  It wasn't like night and day or anything but it felt like I lost some low end tq and picked up some power on the top end.
