Title: about to place my first order at ace stainless
Post by: jay on February 16, 2010, 04:54:58 PM
i currently have one kid who wants a ramhorn and a kid who wants a log manifold..

i want enough stock to build 2 more log manifolds

so 4 log manifolds =
3 x 2 90degree bends = 6 90 degree bends
3 x 2 Tee's = 6 tee's

then i figured 20 more 90 degree bends for the ram horn mani
+ 4 feet of straight pipe

was thinking about picking up some tight radius 90degree bends

should i bother with 45's? cant i just cut 1 90degree bend into 2 45's?

sorry if this post is retarded i guess im having buyers remorse lol

i just got my tax return check so im all set to go to harbor frieght to pick up a band saw and welding helmet in the next few days

Why not mandrel bends?

Do yourself a favor and talk to CoreyR or CSAddict before you place your order.  I'd also talk to our friends at Mandrel Bends as they are selling pipe bends now.

I'd also think twice if you want to invest all your money into welding gear.

Why not mandrel bends?

going off what jd said all i saw was 16 gauge which i was told was *sigh* flimsy..

also i couldnt get past the whole with or without legs ordeal (ace vs columbia river)

im also going to order a bunch of mild steel flanges and a ss flange for the ramhorn mani from weir

You should only need 13 bends to be a ramhorn if your using 90's.  then you need 3 90's and 2 t's for a log. unless your not running wategates.

I will tell you this order as many as you can because the shipping kills the online places vs local for me atleast. but if you order 50-100 then you have alot to work with and can suck up the shipping.

but local places cost more dont they?

what kind of local stores would stock the ss?

You clearly don't want a stainless flange for a Ram Horn. It will banana and you will be pissed.

Since when do you weld? Lets see some work sir!!

I buy from ferguson, it's a chain plumbing and contractor supplier. I pay $6/e local for the 90's and no shipping. so it depends on how many i need that i choose where i buy. Also i get the straight pipe cheaper also $8/f 20' sticks.

On the local front I have used FW Web here in CT. Their prices climb and fall all the time so I always have to call and beat them up on every order.

havent started welding yet!

im about to.

so even if you bolt a ss flange to a head or to a jig to keep it from bending/warping it wont work?

so fuck ~100 dollar ss flanges?

i just figured if its a high end manifold to make it all out of ss...

idk...

Yeah SS as flange material really doesn't work. T?he heat imput needed to weld a 1/2" flange to a sch10 pipe properly will destroy a SS flange pretty easily.

better get a deposit, people back out very often and you have a track record of getting screwed over

^^^This, i have had more people tell me they want this and that, hell some have delivered cars then want to back out of half there order. they don't understand shit. Be carefull.

I find it a bit funny you are taking orders for manifolds when you have never made one. Thats amibitious! or silly......

i dont get it.. why do they have ss flanges then?

so a mild steel flange would work best? it wouldnt rust or flake or any bs like that? meh

thats why im only taking 3 orders.. and im only going to build the log mani without the turbo inlet.. then when they pay me ill cut the log and weld up the turbo flange and external wastegate flange..

if they dont come through then ill just have a log manifold that isnt specialized for anything so it isnt bad...

I find it a bit funny you are taking orders for manifolds when you have never made one. Thats amibitious! or silly......

yeah been through alot of shit.. had someone rear end my car hit and run so i sold it for dirt cheap then used that money + a little cash i had laying arround to pick up the welder..

tax return came in today so ill be ordering up the metal and going to hf for a bandsaw and welding mask..

well see

ill have my welder hooked up in less than a week hopefully gonna have my metal ordered up by then too

Well Buk its tough making a "living" making manifolds. Ask anyone that does. I do not. I make one here and there when I feel like it. I have a day job that I don't mind going to.

With that said just remember what everyone says. Clean, clean, clean. Clean the metal, keep the tungsten clean. Everytime you touch or contaminate it STOP, regrind the tungsten and then get back at it. Everytime. No exception. Good root pass on sch 10/40 is a good practice with a cap pass is how I do it. Many only make one pass, but back purge would be a must I would think.  You know the rest. Its just seat time. I would suggest getting started, to leaving the filler in the puddle and make a Z or a C pattern with the torch.

Good luck, hope to see some sick shit come out of the BukFab camp!

Oh and get a good 4 1/2" angle grinder and some Norton flap wheels for it. They last a long time and leave a "finished" finish as they grind.

My guess would be for very high end n/a headers. They usually don't get as hot as a turbo manifold, and the material can be welded at lower temps (amps). this would make the stainless flanges work i spose.

This better not be a CC-Fab mess, because i know i had friends buy those things and had to personally fix 2. When i could have just sold them manifolds in the first place. But the price was to good to pass up.... :?:

You gotta love tax return time. :) So many new adventures born from those checks.

I wouldn't suggest stainless flanges unless you are very comfortable tig welding. That's a big expensive oops if you screw it up and warp it.

econotig was easiest sub 1500 dollar welder to resell

I don't have room ATM for a big mother, plus it's easy enough to change the belt to avoid any contamination when it's needed elsewhere. I can't see the pad under the work area lasting too long and it's loud as fuck, but works great for just resharping shit.

also, in for the results. i think its hilarious to take orders for manifolds and never welded anything ever. i made my first manifold for someone else, but i didnt charge for my time and i had been welding for years before that first one.

are 3/8th exhaust flanges really too thin? lol

Have you thought about taking some welding classes at the local community college

Do you own a mig? This is by far the most useful welder for typical repairs for locals if that is the route your planning. Internet manifold guys went down hill once the cdm cast manifolds got below a 100 bucks.

I have it in my head that I will open an exhaust repair shop.

I dont use the word doing well in business. Either your doing horrible or are a baller. there is no middle ground sir.

Exhaust work will always be there but trying to be MR. performance exhaust shop=fail. My vision is helping single Mom's with exhaust leaks on 99 Toyota camry's and being paid well and then porting them on Friday night.

This week Im working on some classic piles of shit and they are uber stock. They also uber pay the bills

I also am porting out a handful of rrc k20 manifolds and a d16y8 head this week.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

If it hasn't been covered yet, make sure you bolt the flanges to a junk LS head or huge flat chunk of steel. I recall one incident where a n00b had a good 3/8" of warpage from end to end. The only real fix was to cut the whole thing off.

You should also be able to get away with using a 4x4 with lag bolts.  Keep a fire extinguisher around if it decides to catch on fire.

idk...

if i like welding and im good at it ill order me some decent plate steel or find some somewhere for a decent welding table lol

I'm not a professional fabricator, but I doubt if you put a good amount of lag bolts into a 4x4, they'd pull out or allow the material to warp.  I'd put some sort of fiberglass or something fire retardant around the wood so it wouldn't burst into flames.  I'd also still have a fire extinguisher very close by.

Ok, do not buy a core head. There is no clearance to ge the torch in and around to do the welding without losing sight of the weld area or having to use a poor torch angle.

Go call a trailer repair place or metal supply store. You can get a chunk of 4"x 24-32" 1/2" plate and drill some holes in it. Pretty easy, also it's doesn't cost much at all.

Mig welding is

1. Much easier to learn
2. Can do manifolds just as well
3. Fuckin faster
4. Welds not as pretty

Now they guys on here who have 5 years under their belts with a tig in their hands will disagree with me but your trying to make a buck day one. Tig welding from the little practice I have had is pretty time consuming imo.

Go buy a nice hobart mig.
Title: Re: about to place my first order at ace stainless
Post by: CSaddict on February 23, 2010, 06:56:37 AM
I learned how to weld on a TIG first and then I used a MIG. The MIG is more useful but people pay for TIG.

Jay there is a guy on Turbo Options that bought a manifold from me. Now he did like you. Just bought a welder and got down to it. He still needs lots more practice but he has steady customers locally where he lives.

then when he rushed to make manis and half assed them it let to cracked manifolds

I think everyone should learn to TIG or Stick weld first. Mig is too fast, and it "looks" welded, but in fact can be cold lapped. Both TIG and stick move much slower, and you can really see when it is wetting in, it makes you a much better mig welder. Laying down a bead with a mig anyone can do, making a good weld with a mig, takes a lot of practice just like any of the other welding process's.

hmmm i see some prewired 220v lines back from when we had a ac unit hooked up before we got central air..

its farther then id like but i think ill just stick the plug there and have the welder itself outside the actual room im welding in.. heh well see

would it be a problem if i spliced the wires to extend it or should i just replace it with a new wire from the panel
Title: Re: about to place my first order at ace stainless

Dude, your gona catch your house on fire!! Run a new line from your panel and make it 8gauge. The shorter the run the better. My panel is in my garage and my 220 outlet is right under my panel. I wouldnt run any wire smaller than 8gauge. 6 would be best.

Just call another electriction. It's not worth burning your house down. BTW, if you do burn your shit down you think insurance is ever going to cover that once they see your ghetto wiring? NO.....

Go buy a proper welder extention cord if your not hard wiring in the 220v, there not cheap but there fully sealed and there no risk of a fire.

breakers and rating. Round up:
14 -15amp
12- 20amp
10 - 30 amp
8 - 40 amp
Don't mix them up. you'll either burn shit up, or waste money on copper you can't get full use of. What's the amp draw on the welder's name plate at 240? You need ?/2 unless it's a four prong, and then you need ?/3

We run 230V in the US, not 200.  It says 6 gauge is good up to 150ft.  10 gauge is probably ok for 20-30ft.  50ft you could probably be ok with 8 gauge.  If the difference in price is only $10-20, I'd run 6 gauge.

does the manual really call for a 80 amp breaker?

I run a 40 amp breaker on my sync 200 and push it harder then you can/would on your welder. I Have never popped the breaker even after pushing it for a few hours on 180 amps. So i can't imagine you needing a 80 amp breaker.

Jay,

Run a 60A breaker with 6-8 gauge wire.  Do not run individual wires, that is against code.  You could probably run 10 gauge wire, but it seems 8 gauge wire is only $10 more than the 10 gauge, so you should run the 8 gauge wire.

Electrical code is typically overkill, but the difference in cost between doing it right and wrong is typically not enough to do it wrong.

I used 1/8" sheet for my table. It's not about the thickness of the top plate but more so about the quality of the structure. I had the 1/8" 4'x8" sheet bent 90* front side down back side up about 6". This not only ad's stregth to the thinner top. but also gives a back to the table so nothing falls off the back.  I used 11 gauge( pretty sure) wall 2" square tubing for the legs and frame of the table. It's heavy and sturdy as shit.

I will see if i can find a picture.

sounds like a plan!
depending on difference in cost in material well see...

nice weld in the basement with no ventilation!  that is sick  O0

basements have windows...

lol im using a small corner room with 2 windows (one of them is sealed shut) ill prolly just have the one window..

thinking bout a small shop vac setup to suck up the exhast :p

mount the shop vac outside and set it up to a switch so when i weld i flip it and ittl suck away the fumes and do whatever it wants with them outside :p

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=93981 (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=93981)

Bigger one
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=6852 (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=6852)

big hammer (smaller like 2lb is more controlable)
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=6747 (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=6747)

NICE gloves are key. (btw fuck tig gloves, and having multiple ones to switch out) I use these gloves, there cheap $14ish and last forever. They also conform and slightly shrink to your hand shape, this makes them even more comfortable as time goes on.
http://www.jtillman.com/products/?SKU=1490 (http://www.jtillman.com/products/?SKU=1490)

That is all forget the tony vice and dremel, just get 2 of the 4.5" or w/e grinders and have different grit pads/flap discs on them, and a air cut off wheel.

Have you guys not been around long enough to know Buk?

Buk, before you weld anything to that head flange, make sure you are welding on the face of the flange and not the ass.

I hope you bought some straight sections to slice up into 2" sections to practice welding.  Remember, bevel, clean, and two passes.

i never really noticed till i looked at a 4g63 turbo manifold lol

bought a 4 1/2 inch angle grinder.. some wire wheels for it.. wire brushes.. a curved file to "match" the flange to the runners.. and some cheap ass vice that im hoping will work to crimp the metal

im practicing on some straight pipe for sure lol

i dont have a bench grinder (ill buy one if this works out) so beveling is gonna suck dick

Try it and find out.  I can tack them without them warping, but when I was first learning I kept the heat on them for a while to get the tack to go.  You need to stop asking questions and start welding some shit and practicing.  That is the best source of answers you are going to get.
