I started the application process, next step is my handgun safety course (next weekend) and putting a deposit down on a gun before i submit the final application.
Im looking to spend somewhere in the $300 range for something so i can go to the range and feel like a badass. I know basically nothing about guns, someone point me in the right direction for something I wont regret buying later on down the road.

Not sure there's anything in the range of $300 that you could consider a great buy, unless you find an "acceptable" gun used at a good price. Just as I did, I'd look at a Smith and Wesson SW9VE (9mm), or if you want the .40 cal, just change the 9 in the model # to 40.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.impactguns.com%2Fstore%2Fmedia%2Fsw%2Fsmith_sigma_9mm.jpg&hash=e40d71d69ba4beefb3b18431ed33a1872dfd3d20)
The 9 (or 40) VE is Smith and Wessons best copy of a glock, and they actually got sued because of it. Anyway, it's a good starter gun, then once you step into the $500+ range you'll find the sw9ve to feel more like driving a new hyundai instead of a new acura ($500+ range)
I seem to remember google searching "gun buyers guide" or some shit like that, that took me to a site where you could get the inside scoop and reviews of whatever you were looking at. A useful tool, otherwise we'd all be carrying Jimenez or high points.

what are your plans with the gun? range, carry, or what? if you just want a handgun and don't want to carry, get a hi-point. i love mine, it was dirt ass cheap, shoots great, has never malfunctions, and is so fucking heavy the recoil is super low. but don't plan on carrying it, its a big heavy bitch of a gun.

faggot
test it out for me, i only want real-world advice
Anyway, plans are just to take it to the range and also tuck it under my pillow to make my dreams sweet.
I dont know if I cant get a used one since I'm not sure a store would take a deposit on a used one. Orange County makes you prove youre buying a legit gun before they give you the handgun permit.
Stealth, I was actually reading about the sw9ve, some people said the trigger was very very heavy. I'm not looking to unload hundreds of rounds so I guess that shouldnt be an issue though. Doesnt it also not have a safety?
-
I'll tell you where to get any gun you want for cheap.....
BUT
You have to use it on Chris Harris....
-
i think the quesiton can't be answered without you giving us more information.
why are you buying the gun? sport? self-defense?
if self defense, are we talking a gun you are comitted to carrying all the time, or a nightstand/stay in the car type of gun?
$300? probably going to be going to a gun shop to get a used gun in that price range. if you're very lucky you can get a well worn in gun. assuming you wind up with a used gun, be sure they let you take it out and fire it afew days to make sure it works (return/working policy) AND prefferably be a gun that has some type of lifetime warranty.
honestly, a 22LR pistol will be the best place to start. pistol shooting is not natural. you wont find many people that can simply walk up to a pistol as a novice and hit a target the size of a large man at 25'. ive told the story before but a long time friend of mine bought an HK USP .45 and hit the target twice in two clips worth of ammo from sub 30'. we grew up shooting rifles and clay shooting so... most data ive seen on pistol shooting says they occure at (i forget) 5-10 feet. but i wouldn't trust most people to put a bullet on the target from 10'+ without practice.
sooooooooo. my recommendation is for you to go buy someone's 22LR and if you can get to where you can hit a man sized target & not give up, save your money & buy another gun. that will give you a near inexhaustable supply of ammunition & practice.
-
The trigger of the SW9VE takes more pull than most other guns, but the only people to recognize it are people who shoot other guns. With this being your first gun, you won't know the difference.
Oh, and only get a 22 if you plan on only shooting at the range for fun. Don't intend on it stopping anyone. I'd rather have a bomb pellet gun.
-
get a rossi/taurus 357 mag, 6 rds of fury. shoot pussy .38 till you learn how to shoot then step up to manhood and get some 357 mags. new ~$320, used <$200

The part about keeping it under my pillow was sarcasm, this thing will be intended for the range. Granted, if trouble comes knocking at my door I wont say "damn, but thats my range-only pistol", but I'm not looking for a hand-cannon that i cant shoot as a novice.
I'll be buying the gun at a local gun shop, most likely this big chain called Gander Mountain where i'm taking the safety course. I think I'm going to check out what the law/policy is concerning my permit and If i can put a deposit on a used gun since it seems my $300 aint gonna go far towards a new one. I dont mind buying used if they will let me, especially if it gets me into a better class of guns. The 300 isnt carved in stone, just something I had in the back of my mind.

S&W Sigma, Taurus Millemium Pro, CZ 100, Bersa Thunder, Taurus 24/7, Bersa MiniThunder,
All good and all found around $350-400. Probably all you'll find *brand* spaking new that has mostly quality to it.
Now we're not even talking revolvers or buying a $50-200 midnight special either!
-
just be sure you get a gun box, manuals, mags when you get something. possibly ammo too. youre in NC?
$400-450 imo right now where the industry is shooting for new mid-quality or ok (but not great) condition higher end guns. atleast down here that's the case.
seems like too many permits in north carolina.

only problem is the 12lb trigger pull. fucking ridiculous. i sold mine and bought a Springfield XD40. excellent gun

Dad bought a brand new taurus .40 fucking this broke after two clips dumped out. Sent it back to taurus and they have had it for three months now fuck that shit

If it's a range gun then anything other than a .22 is a total waste of money. Get a reasonable quality .22lr that handles like a normal gun (that means not those gay ass Rugers), then go and practice, practice, practice, for nice and cheap.
Go buy some Remmington Vipers to keep in it when you're not at the range. Those will give you better muzzle energy than a .38spc for 1/10 of the price. Not something I'd trust, personally, but excellent for a .22lr.
-
seriously if your NOT going to carry it then get a .22lr gun. buying any larger caliber just for range shooting is retarded because the ammo is too expensive.
-

I wasn't aware there were any permits in NC. All my gun owning friends are felons, or it's a drop gun because they are the old school southern mentality where guns are for killing a man who deserves it and none of the law's business.
On second thought, I'm pretty sure MR2Guru's guns are legit, but he's French and they are law abiding socialists like that.
-
friend had a P22 brand new, wouldn't reliably cycle anything he ever put in it & got rid of it. :\
im with corey, buy a quality 22LR for the range & plinking. just beware, it can be a chore to find a 100% reliable 22 semi-auto.
JD, NC seems to lwant a CCW and a permit to buy/sell/transfer a pistol per the generic law list sites.

dear god NY? good fucking luck LoL

I'm less than an expert on guns. I don't need to own one. :-\
-
and im less than an experct on anything honda related, but i still shoot them both just like you do lol i own many because they're fun, i grew up with them & i inherited alot of them.
i carry because i like things to be an uneven playing field when shit hits the fan. ive got a badass 6'2 275lb ex-MLB, Army, uncle that doesn't need to carry. i also grew up with a 6'2 240lb MLB and watched a nigger my size stab him to death in the tummy when we were 18.
ive got nothing against busting a big guy in the face if i have too (when not carrying), but id rather have it and not need it.
it can't be said enough in these threads either. once you start carrying you give up any right you had to cause or end trouble. no more fighting, no more talking shit or being a jackass. you get in one fight and have a gun on you - you better shoot him dead cause you'll be face down on the ground with a gun in the back of your head facing a felony if you wanna hit a dude while you got a gun on you. its either be calm or shoot them dead.

Don't shoot shit bulk ammo and you won't have a problem. All the retards buy the P22/Mosquito (it's the same gun internally), buy low power bulk junk that the gun was never designed to fire, and then go all over the internet and say they suck. Shoot high velocity ammo like the manual says to and you won't have a problem at all.

When I want to just go shoot i bring the Walther P22. Nothing compares price wise for ammo. You can get 550 rounds for $13.47 at Walmart. I bought a military surplus ammo box and decided to fill it. 10 boxes of ammo (5500 rounds) and no real dent in the wallet. That should last me a while. It looks pretty sweet in the box too.
I've been out with it less than 10 times and last weekend was out shooting and I was surprised how accurate it was. We set up a barrel at 150 yards away. With a red dot my best was hitting it 3 times out of 10. Not bad for that distance and my noobness.

150 yards or 150 feet?
22lr hitting anything you aim at 150 yards out is unlikely, especially out of a pistol length barrel. that federal ammo you got from walmart even has a chart on back telling how much it drops at distance. shit drops like 12" at 100 yards.

Stop limp wristing it. Clean it. What you had between you was junk.
If he hates it so much, tell him I'll take his piece of junk off his hands for $150.

not my gun and its long gone for being a piece of shit.
im not saying all semi-automatic 22LR pistol / rifles are shit. im simply saying between the ammunition and the guns you can't count on any of them to be 100% reliable.
it wouldn't shoot my remington (yellowjacket, thunderbolt & cyclone, i normally keep 2 of the 3), nor would it shoot winchester super-x. so it was a piece of shit. for what its worth it wouldn't cycle (feed or extract) anything at walmart.
gun was spotless and had casting marks & flashing polished away.
he knew gun maintenance...
If your P22 is awesome, that's awesome. alot of them are. just as many have problems as dont. (honestly i told him i would give him $100 for the gun before he went and got his money back - figured itd be more fun than my 9 shot 22lr revolver. but id rather have my revolver. always cycles, no ftf or fte & shoots anything you put in it period)

The manual on both the Mosquito and the P22 recommends CCI Mini Mag, and the guns even ship with coupons for it now. Yet, every retard will go out and buy shit Walmart ammo (like you guys did) and then say the gun is a piece of junk because it doesn't cycle.
Trust me, I did the research before buying one, and EVERY time there's someone complaining about the guns being junk it's because they're using the wrong ammo. The Sig boards are FULL of idiots saying what junk the guns are. They've tried every ammo the world over... execpt the one the manufacturer recommends. That's why these guns have such bad reputations.
-
same shit with my glock 17, if i use cci ammo i got at minimum 3 stovepipes in 17 rds. use the Winchester bulk pack and have yet to have any sort of failure.
-
My first one was mentioned in the thread already. S&W Sigma 9VE. The trigger pull is heavy compared to other handguns I've fired. Removed the second spring inside the trigger group, which lightened the trigger quite a bit. I've put around ~800 rounds through it without a single malfunction.
Otherwise I like it for the price. Paid about $300 new.

I believe in white supremacy until blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.... The academic community has developed certain tests that determine whether the blacks are sufficiently equipped scholastically.... I don't feel guilty about the fact that five or ten generations ago these people were slaves. Now I'm not condoning slavery. It's just a fact of life, like the kid who gets infantile paralysis and can't play football like the rest of us. - John Wayne

Kel-Tec PF9 has an MSRP of $333 on their website and I've seen them at Gander Mountain for around $290-300 new. Reliable with a simple fluff and buff on the slide rails and feed ramp and you're not restricted to an anemic .380. Also, 9mm Para is about as cheap as you can get for centerfire cartridges...I've heard nothing but good things about the DAO trigger but don't know the pull weight right off the top of my head.
All in the lightest, slimest 9mm ever made. That's what I'm planning on buying once I move to a carry state and since noone else mentioned it yet, I figured I'd throw it out there.

150 Yards. I've got pictures of it up on facebook. We had about 10 guys and 30 guns. 3 .22 pistols. I couldn't do it regularly but that was my best for the day. Had to shoot pretty damn high.
-
My buddy has a p22 and we have only shot cci through it, not a single malfunction, I've personally shot about 1000rds through it, I am sure he done over 5000rds, I am still surprised because most of the .22 semi auto pistols I have shot have feed issues one way or another over time. My dad has an old semi auto beretta .22, I haven't found a fail prrof ammo for it yet, but it could use a good cleaning as well.

It's .88" thick, but is it thinner than the new taurus pt709 "slim"?, cause that's the one I was looking for next.

Couldn't find any solid numbers on the 709, but from the pictures I saw it doesn't look like it's any more slim than the PF9. Definately not any lighter at 19oz (PF9 weighs in at a cunthair under 13 oz, roughly 16oz with loaded mag) which means the Kel-Tec would suck more at the range but would be a better carry gun.
Although I've heard nothing but good things about Taurus the last few years aside from their inability to update their website, I'd still go for the PF9 over it. Hard to find any firearms that are actually made in the USA anymore, so that's a big plus for KT. Not to mention the MSRP on the Taurus over $100 more.
I'm also a little unsure about about Taurus's DA/SA trigger set up with a striker fired auto. I admit I've never really finger fucked one much but I'm personally more comfortable with a DAO, especially if the trigger pull is similar to the P3AT which uses the same trigger design with only a 5lb pull.

then you should cut off sigs & avatars and quit whining about it.
i wouldn't mind carrying a .380 Kel-Tec P3AT. bout like taking my 9mm and shrinking it almost an inch in every direction & cutting out the vast majority of the weight! ive looked at some .380's before, not very hard, but i can't find any .380acp localy within 1/3 the price of 9mm :\ i like to shoot alot so i always rule it out. (would still make a great carry pistol. easily small enough to take 24-7)
the major problem is always trying to balance a range / ammo price friendly gun and a small carry gun - if the OP wants to get his CCW and carry. the really small carry friendly calibers are not always as cheap as say 9mm.
be SURE to hit up your local pawn / gun shops before you come to a decision too. if you can spot an OK used higher end gun - more power too you! alot of shops will give you a deal on the gun, ammo or both just to turn stock over & keep you off the internet.

Try finding ammo. .380 is getting tough to find locally and at decent prices. I'm thinking about letting go my new never fired Cobra .380 for that reason alone.
9mm ftw
-
Just deal with the size, the added stopping power and ease of locating ammo will be worth it

so far this is what Ive held/been interested in:
Walther p22(felt decent, but a little toy-ish)
Sig Mosquito (felt great but I read a lot of bad reviews)
a few czech, hungarian, etc Makarov (sp?) ...these fit my hand pretty well
Bersa Thunder 380 (felt great, I'm going to go back and see if they can get the .22 model to save some $$)
There were a few others but these were the ones that stand out in my memory. I found a cool local gun shop with a way better selection that Gander Mountain, gonna go back again today.

those are plinkers, dont expect to stop some 250lb 6'4" nig with one of those
-
if he was looking at the czech cz52 pistol that shoots 7.62x25 then that would surely stop someone just as easy as a .45acp would. not to mention that ammo is ab out the cheapest surp ammo available.

I forget the model #, but it was 9x18. I'm not looking to mow people down, just paper targets.

I've heard lots of good things about the 9x18 (9mm MAK) pistols except for the Polish P64, so stay away from that one. If you find an East German one for a good price, snatch it up quick. The 9x18 is a step up from the .380 ACP (9x17mm) but depending on where you are it could be even harder to find. IIRC there are replacement barrels chambered for .380 ACP, if you can find one for sale.
http://www.makarov.com/ (http://www.makarov.com/) <-- Good info there. They also make a decent budget carry pistol if the need ever arises.
However, if you're certain about only ever shooting it at a range, go for a .22 and save yourself the money on ammo.

As far as I understand, 9x18 is an odd version of the 9mm, won't work interchangably, and in all my bullet shopping, I've never seen them for sale. Might want to look into that.

Yea the guy said they arent interchangeable (but a 9x18 will shoot where a 9x19 should be), but he said its not a problem to get the ammo. He said it might be easier/cheaper at times since there is less demand than 9x19, not sure how much sense that makes.
I'm going to hold the Bersa again today. It was roughly the same price as the used Czech Mak (300 ish).

mak's are nice, they have a decent trigger. 7rd capacity sucks though, or is it 8?

Absolutely not. The 9x18 bullet diameter is larger than the diameter of a 9x19.
That wouldn't be a bad option because ammo is cheap. In fact, it might be your best option if you actually want something worth carrying.
Otherwise, the Mosquito is internally the same gun as the P22. The bad reviews are due to retards as I previously explained. If you like how it felt, that's your best bet. I've had no problems with mine, my friend has had no problems with his and if you actually read the reviews on the SIG forums the ammo issues that cause the complaints are explained.
Stay away from anything in .380. As someone else said it is THE hardest to find ammo right now. The gun isn't worth shit if you can't shoot it.

Hrm...i mustve heard him wrong, i couldve sworn he said it was some design plan so that certain things were interchangeable but that it didnt work out to the advantage of the US.
Anyway, the main guy wasnt there today so they took down my name and will call me with a price on the .22 Bersa. From what I've read it seems to be pretty well-liked, just hard to find.
The makarov they had is the cz82, with a 12(?) round mag, or maybe it was 11+1, i forget. They also had the cz52 for dirt cheap but it looks pretty beastly/uncomfortable.
-
damn it seems this place is way overpriced on this cz82...they want like 330 when i see them online for like 200, wtf.

From what I've read the 82 is a nice gun, everyone seems to like them. 52 isn't something I'd want to take to an indoor range.

Might be something to consider for your purchase. These are supposed to be pretty badass.

update: I just bought the Sig Mosquito in two-tone last night. Came close to spending more on something bigger and decided against it, now I just need to turn in all my paperwork and wait :P
One thing that helped me make up my mind was that they had one in the vault that no one had really handled, some of the other bigger guns they only had the one in the case that everyone has fucked with.
